Oh man, the only ATL store they mention is Full Moon. Take that Criminal and Wax'N'Facts!

Full Moon is definitely underappreciated, but there's really no reason to go there more than 4 or 5 times a year. That dollar bin is loaded to the gills with multiple copies of the same utter crap, and damned if I haven't lost the patience to look through it anymore.

denver's twist'n'shout made it. as did wax trax, but that place has a limited selection and doesn't deserve a mention.

they review the store that cemeterypolka works at now:
Quote:
Plan 9
3012 W. Cary Street
Richmond, VA 23221

About: Hip Carytown (the Haight-Ashbury of decidedly non-hip Richmond) plays host to the flagship of the Plan 9 record chain. It's not so much the best record store in VA's capital as the only one.

Specialty: Indie Rock, Jazz, Techno, used CDs, and subculture knicknacks all play a part in Plan 9's funky oeuvre, but it's the sordid pleasures of the basement that really make it shine. Budget compact discs and a deep vinyl catalog with a heavy turnover rate and user-friendly pricing make for an environment on which even the most hesitant of music buyers will feel tempted to lavish a bit of cash.

What They're Missing: The staff can be somewhat distant and the music is often waaaaaaaaaay too loud, but the main complaint lies with the Broadtime listening stations, which crap out more often than rock out.

Why We Love It: Besides the delightful Deanna upstairs and the aforementioned downtown pleasures of the basement, the fact that anything in the store can be listened to before buying (whether CD or wax) pretty much seals the deal. Factor in a truly respectable, deep catalog of classic artists and indie favorites and you've got the best record store in Timbaland's home state.

wow, no mention of any store in pennsylvania (jerry's in pittsburgh, aka and spaceboy in philly). although, at least i now know where the thing is. i spent a day looking for it, nowhere near that manhattan ave address.

i would've added gramaphone as a chicago record store, even solely due to its historical significance in the chicago house scene. it's still a great record store, though.

ive never been to Full Moon in my 31+ years as an atlanta area resident.

Good to see Wuxtry make it; I always like the OTHER record store in Athens but they got bought out by School Kids Records and I'm not sure if its held up as well.

I used to LOVE going to Wax'N'Facts...not so much in recent years though.

W'N'F has two things going for it:

1. Best used CD bin in Atlanta. Small, frequently restocked, and usually reasonably priced.

2. Used vinyl new arrivals bin by the door. You can walk in, take a minute of two to look through it, and leave.

Otherwise: Weak selection of often overpriced new vinyl that isn't restocked very often. CD's, however, are generally about $.25 cheaper than Criminal, but they don't have a whole lot.

This is a great, great article and needs to be bumped. It also reconfirms what I have always thought, the Bay Area has the best record stores on earth and they didn’t even include the wonderful Mod Lang.

Of course the mighty Amoeba is number one, how come no one can copy this model and take it countrywide?

Interesting that Rotate is the only choice for Toronto.

I don't think I've actually even been there but I'm a fan of Soundscapes.

They totally missed Euclid records in St. Louis, probably one of the best jazz record shops in the country. Vintage vinyl is OK and has beefed up their vinyl selection in the last year or so as vinyl is getting a bit more popularity, but Euclid Records has three times as much. And, Record Exchange has even more, although most of it is in crappy shape so I never go there.

It could be worse. The ends of my hair are bright orange still, but my roots are coming in dark brown and the in-between is turning yellowy-orange.

They left one out of the Midwest...

Love Garden Sounds, my very favorite shop here in Lawrence, KS. They recently had instore performances with Will Oldham and William Elliott Whitmore. They have decent new and used vinyl and cds. They have half a dozen cats hanging around the store.
