I was thinking about this a little, and I've halfway decided to make a mix of my favorite songs between the ages of 6 and 12.

Man....if I did this, you'd get a bunch of songs from the Xanadu or Urban Cowboy soundtracks that I listened to between age 6-8. Between age 9 to 12, I wasn't listening to jackshit.

OK, this is concerning me...a bit. I'll have to rethink the theme idea. And shut up Rads. ;)

hey guys, I wasn't saying put on your favorite song from "Grover Sings the Blues" (although that would be kinda kitschy, eh?), and I'm not saying it would have to be all old stuff. It's whatever you want it to be. To me, in order for anyone to get a true idea of where I got my musical likes from, you'd have to hear the progression. So yeah, in that sense, I will be including some older stuff, but I'd also be including new stuff that is in the same vein.

But you know what? What the fuck do I know?

Hey, my favorite songs were never really kids' music. Just some terrible songs. "Africa" by Toto, "Ride the Wind" by Poison, "Man in the Mirror" by Michael Jackson. Stuff like that.

In all seriousness, though, I got what you were going for with your idea. I kind of thought through what all I would put on there, but it didn't really excite me since I feel like I've already put just about all of those songs (favorites from favorite albums) on a mix at one time or another. I suppose I could make it more interesting for myself by trying to do a historical progression of stuff I got into and where it lead me. The childhood thing was just sort of taking that to an extreme (and a joke).

I just think people are having a good time messing around with the idea, but realistically, the mixes will be fine when it's all said and done.

I hope anyway...;)

Bump.

(I know, all these bumps are annoying, but I'll only do them until the 29th.)

one more comment and then I'll shut up...

did you guys not have older siblings? and for those of you who did not, did you not discover older influential stuff as you grew up? I'm not suggesting we all put Foreigner, Sir Mix-a-Lot and Olivia Newton John on these mix cd's. If it wasn't for my sister, I would have never heard Bowie or the B-52's. I mean, think larger picture!

i did not have older siblings and my parents do not listen to music. i'm often amazed that it eventually resonated for me.

but you discovered what you liked, and that's all that matters. That's all I was trying to say.

RECAP: September 25, 2006

We're into the second week of the join in process so I thought we'd recap.

1. We've established a theme. I know some people believe that we can do better, but it's a fine theme that won't be too restrictive when making your mix. Like Dana said, you can communicate the theme however you'd like.
REMINDER: "I was just thinking it'd be kinda cool to compile a mix of songs that completely define you as an individual, whether they be old or new songs. You know, taking specific artists or specific songs that shaped your current view/taste in music today. I think it's kinda open to interpretation on how people want to communicate that."
2. There will be more than one group. Currently, going by the amount of people who joined, it looks like there'll be 3 or 4 groups of anywhere from 6 to 8 people each.
3. Reviews will be a huge part of this mix exchange. Please don't let this discourage you from joining the exchange. Reviews can be anything from a song by song review to a small paragraph of what you thought of the mix. The reason for this is to add to the enjoyment of the mix process by getting feedback for your work. Bad or good, people generally like to get feedback for a project they've worked on.
4. The mailing process will be a bit different than usual. Mixes will not be sent at the same time. I will come up with a schedule of dates when your mixes should go out. Basically, each member will get a designated mail date. After they hopefully mail out their mix on time, the other members of the group will receive the mix, and have at least one or two weeks to listen to it and write a review. Hopefully, once reviews are in, the next member will be instructed to mail out their mix, and so on.
5. Deadline for joining is 5:00 PM Eastern Time Friday (Sept 29).

Once again, if this sounds like something you'd like to try, E-mail me your full name and address (DO NOT PM ME). I will put together a spreadsheet of addresses and E-mail it to everyone who'll be receiving a mix from you. I will also keep you updated on whose mix will be sent out that particular week.
My E-mail: chris.bitados@gmail.com

Involved so far are:

E-Mail Received (17)
Alongwaltz, Ayah, Bgl3, Cosmic Bus, Contradiction, Dnorwood, Drinky, Dumpjack, Lego, Naked, Oldbullee, OPA, Posthumus, RParis74, Spontaneous Poet, Stone, and Timis.

No E-Mail Received (3)
MiceElf, Radcliffe (tentative), and Shiv.

For those who are still tentative, please let me know for sure, either way, by Friday September 29 when I put together the groups.

i was planning on compiling a mix with this theme anyway. my question is that do we send the same mix to every person in our group? or do we have a different theme for each round or whatever?

Yeah, each member of your group should get the same mix. I'll explain the reason for this at another time.

If this goes well, then we'll discuss the possibility of reshuffling the groups and changing the theme as well for a future exchange. We'll see how this one goes first.
