I was just goofing on those commercials. I would help, but I haven't worked on a Mac in a couple years, and that was OS 9.

Yeah, if you're doing a full reinstall you'll lose everything that you don't backup. Whatever settings you need just go into the respective app and write them down to reenter once the install is done. Most cable modems don't need any set up within the operating system, just plugging in the ethernet cable assigns you an ip from the cable co's dhcp server by default. Mail settings are found in Prefs -> Accounts, just write down whatever's there.

In that case, just plug it in, and drop in the tub.

With Safari specifically, there is an app you can download that will let you export your bookmarks and settings.

Go to macupdate.com and do a search for Safari Bookmark Exporter. You may find little apps to help with your other software as well.

are you doing a fresh install or just an update? with the 10.4 install CD I think there is an option to do an archive and backup as part of the install.

If you are using Apple's Mail app then you should backup the folder with all your emails anyway. press "CMD+N" to open a new window. The left side will show a list of drives and folders. click on the account ( current user) then click on "LIBRARY"/ "MAIL"

After you have selected the "MAIL" folder go to "FILE" "CREATE ARCHIVE". This will allow you to keep the contents in an archive for later use. You can burn the archives to a CD and then you should be able to place them in the new MAIL folder and restore the contents that way. the settings you will need to do a screen shot and/or write them down.

Screen shots are done by pressing "CMD+SHIFT+3" for the whole screen and "CMD+SHIFT+4" for part of the screen. (just drag and click after you see the crosshairs)

Re-installing OSX does NOT require erasing the entire hard drive. It will reinstall the apps, but not erase your previous app data. I believe the "archive and install" option will save all previous preferences and bookmarks and such.

For a more informed opinion, consult a mac forum; there are plenty.

Hey, Chowgurt lives! I knew he was just lurking, waiting for the right Mac question to come along.

Well, shit, that was easy...How about this one:

I want to move all my music to my external, but when I plug said external inm, I want to be able to display and play music from it in iTunes, without having to drag the files back onto my HD.

Any suggestions?

Hell, I just read about some dude having to leave a Chateau Lafitte-Rothschild with the fucking luggage screeners because of the liquids ban...

You wanna meet at McCormick & Schmick's?

I usually like to have enough drinks that I'm not really that hungry, maybe a bowl of she-crab soup and a nice white, and then we can get down to real drinking.

Of course, were we to meet in a civilized city like New York, we could just meet at the Bar of the Four Seasons, I will be the well dressed giant with a pink orchid in my lapel.
