Good question. Wikipedia says it's the part of Near North bounded by Clark, Chicago, and the river. I would've thought it was farther north than that, but I guess that's Old Town or something.

No. Division is north of Chicago.

nothing "cool" is around there, by "Indie" standards. (i used to work in the neighborhood)

although The Green Door is passable as a simple, unpretentious place to grab a few beers. It's on Orleans at around Huron. still draws a fairly yuppie crowd, though. but it ain't bad.

if you want to spend a little more coin, mk is on Franklin, just north of Chicago. It's a fancy-schmancy restaurant (my friend Todd is executive chef there and my friend Josh is Beverage Manager), and they have a pretty nice bar with a good selection of booze.

can't think of anything else right now.

i work in river north. there's quite a bit of irish pubs around there. The Kerryman is pretty good. Fado's is good but expensive. and i like the Clark Street Ale House as well. lots of microbrews

Yeah, the Clark Street Ale House is pretty cool if it's not crowded.

i don't know if this is technically river north, but the best dive bar in the area is called Rossi's. you should go there.

i second brehon. do you know the story behind that bar, phil?

o'callaghan's (next door or a few doors down from rossi's) is great, too. fairly cheap drinks, doesn't really get crowded until 2am when other places close. it's located between dearborn and state on hubbard.

a little further north (and possibly considered gold coast vs. river north) is underground wonder bar. live music every night of the year (can't say if it's good music) and i remember the drinks being cheap. i spent a night there sampling every flavor of stoli.

I don't know the story behind brehon, but we'd get those damned irish nachos all the time. Wall to Wall is right around the corner.

I just found this thread again and I don't remember why I was asking in the first place, but I just went to mk the restaurant last Monday when my father was in town. It was yumby.
