His first is great, if a bit dated.

Love Story is lovely.

Then you have a whole other catalog with his previous band, the Commotions.

That is funny. Rattlesnakes and Easy Pieces are pretty great, but there really isn't a completely worthless Lloyd Cole album. Didn't hurt that he used Robert Quine as his guitarist on a lot of his solo stuff.

For a left field pick, try Don't Get Weird On Me, Babe. For a great overview, The Best of Lloyd Cole hits most of the highlights.

Fucking hell.

'Rattlesnakes' is one of the definative indie albums of the 80's. You must have hear 'Perfect Skin', you must have...

Lloyd Cole was a Philosophy student at Glasgow University, just like me.

Although there, sadly, the similarities end.

And Fred Maher and Robert Quine. Yow! Lots of cool squiggly guitar and that 1990 alterna-cavern drum sound.

Cole is simultaneously sultry and wounded. Hard trick to pull off.

I'm eagerly awaiting this album which comes out in the states next month. If you asked me who my favorite artist in any year from the mid 80's through the mid 90's, I probably would have told you Lloyd Cole.

Etc. is probably the only album I don't really like alot but its not without a few decent songs. Most people would say to start with the Lloyd Cole and the Commotions albums, with Rattlesnakes being the most important. I can't strenously disagree with that. I agree with estone though that his first s/t solo album is beyond great though. I think it made my listmania even. In addition to Matthew Sweet, Fred Maher and Robert Quine from the Voidoids play on it. All three are semi regular collaborators with Cole. Cole also played on some of Sweet's albums.

Anyway, I can't recommend him highly enough.

I'm curious what the Josh Ritter connection is though...although I haven't heard Ritter's new album, I was never much of a fan. I haven't been able to get anyone who didn't discover Cole in his prime on their own to love him the way I do though so maybe its not as lopsided a comparison as it seems to me.

C'mon Konsty, if it weren't for naging out crappy indie rock, this guy would obviously be unemployable, too ;)

Out of his first 5 CDs, I think only Mainstream isn't great all the way through (thought the first half is stellar).

Picked up Love Story recently on BillyG's recommendation, and haven't been disappointed with the first few listens.

Rattlesnakes is on my Listmania (hint--scour the internet for the import version, it's got all the b-sides as bonus tracks, and unless you collect singles you won't hear "Andy's Babies" anywhere else). I pulled out Easy Pieces the other day, and it still holds up. Radcliffe's spot on with "Don't Get Weird..."--"To The Lions" is a concise, ferocious gem.

Rattlesnakes is, for me, onne of the top five releases of the 80's. A great, great work. I thought he never rose to that level in the solo work.

I put him at the top of the group of great, distinctive voices of the British eccentric tradition... Julian Cope, Paddy McAloon, Brian Protheroe, Mike Scott...

Brian Protheroe?? He's mentioned in real good company, Harry. Should I be ashamed to not know this guy?

Probably totally personal associations... but his voice and songs seemed totally brit crackpot in the way I think of Cope or Cole.. his I You in 1976 with the great, great cut "Hotel" is possibly one of the great unknown songs. Decade before the others (although Teardrop Explodes...) Not a music critic so I most likely am wrong... no need to know him.
