So it seems in recent years that some of the people I was friends with and played music with back in Montreal have been having some success ("famous" was an exaageration for the sake of the quote). I couldn't be more proud. In most cases too, I really love their music.

Anyway, as cliched as it sounds... wtf is it with having friends saying "you should come out to the show" and then basically barely even saying hi? I understand how busy shows can be, but with these particular friends it's been like, 3 shows in a row now.

Maybe it's just that I moved to Toronto. heh heh.

I never thought it would happen with these people, but it seems that they are "too cool" for me now.

Anyone else have this happen with friends?

That's kind of how I felt. I was all: whatevs. I'm not easily impressed, especially by "celebrity" (or quasi-celebrity) bullshit.

i have it going on with some bros all the time. sometimes people don't handle success very well. then you feel bad for being irritated with them because maybe it's just envy or something. i hate it. always good to remember the temporary nature of all these things.

Polly, take your cues from rap, and put out a dis rekkid.

"I introduced you to the Velvet Underground
Now at shows you can't be found
Your album sold 1000 units to a bunch of indie kids
But you just ripped off everything I ever did.."

or somesuch sad-sack Candian mope-rock equivalent.

Yah it just kind of sucks. I didn't even feel like going out to the show, but figured it would be good to show my support (not that they really need it from me anymore). Also just trying to keep up the friendship even though we live in differentc cities. Oh well.

This is more in line with me. It only bugs me when they hadn't even heard of the band they are playing with or have dissed that band previously and then act as if you are non-existent while they try to buddy up to the headlining band.

Yeah...but playing shows is like 90% business for anyone looking to get signed, network, etc., even if business often translates as "chatting up assholes from Vice instead of hanging out with friends."

Not that it was ever like that for me. I always at least said hi to Shmoo.

I have no problem with that, I just think you can usually tell when someone is a little to busy to talk to you rather than flat out ignoring you. I've had people come over to my table and greet me like they might guest at a wedding and then slip away to do business and then I have had some of the same people not even acknowledge my presence as I talk with another musician who is standing right next to them.

Well stated.

Saying hi 5mins before they're going on stage and getting a coldish response = no surprize whatsoever

Saying hi backstage at the very end of the night when almost no one is left in the venue and getting a cold response = a ten on the bullshit detector

You should get drunk and be like, "I KNEW YOU WHEN YOU WERE NOTHING! DO YOU HEAR ME?! NOOOOOTHHHHHHHHHINNNNNNNNG!" If you're drunk enough, you won't remember it the next day.

I only have one friend who I knew before she became famous/popular. I saw her outside of a bar about a year ago, I think, maybe less and she still talked to me like nothing had happened. I also got the feeling that she was relieved to see someone who didn't put her on a pedestal.

Being famous looks like fun.

Yeah, that's kinda lame and I would never have done that, unless it was Shmoo, and I'm glad I'm not friends with folks like that.

But if it was mid-show (e.g. 4 band line-up, my set's done) and I was off trying to find the assholes from Vice, working merch, etc...that's how it goes.

edit: argh, I thought I was quoting polly6.

Ooooo. Who is it? Rachel Yamagata? Can I have her number?

I know a couple dudes in Mae. While they were "negotiating" with Tooth and Nail I ended up seeing a couple of them around either at a show or otherwise. They were always cool to me. Granted they weren't making billions of dollars.

I think when it comes to fame where you're really wealthy and known all over the place that you may start to distrust the people you were slightly more than acquaintences with. Like you may start assuming they are talking to you because they want something from you besides just a hello and a "hey remember when we were in high school" B.S.

Heh heh. Actually I was kinda drunk, (skipped dinner to make the show, but ended up drinking). And I did kinda take the piss out of the situation a bit.

He was all (awkwardly and sounding like he didn't care): "So what's up?"

And I was all (in a fake macho rock-boy voice): "Oh you, checking to a show. Some Montreal band. Talking with some dude." I meant it to be funny, but he didn't play along.

"Meow meow meow."
(this is how I now hear indie rock scenester talk)
