Glenn Gould - Bach: The Goldberg Variations (1955)

How'd I do, you Classical afficianados?
Personally, I think this is a pretty freakign amazing recording. But then, I have nothing to compare it to.

Where should I go from here?
Other pianists?
Are there any definative recordings that I need to have?
Essentials performed/conducted by: Pearlman? Ma? Stern? Bernstein?

Just dipped in my big toe, and the water is nice.

You just opened up a can of worms. If you have a working tt, I suggest you start combing antique shops. You can routinely get "classical" LPs for a buck. I'm no authority in the least..but I have found that you tend to prefer one interpretation over another- if you hear more than one version of a piece.

It all depends on preference, but I like Schnabel for Beethoven- I can say that (not as though Im going out on a limb there).

Id say first focus on music, what period, composer, instruments you are interested in and go from there. Personally, I enjoy early music and compositions for violin and piano.

Oh, the can of worms is one that I am very aware of.
I just trust you people and am curious to know what it is that you enjoy.
Get some ideas.

I'd say his concertos for piano work, but his second symphony is probably my favorite of his works.

Any record store with a decent classical section should have one of these available for browsing. Amazon's guides haven't steered me wrong yet either.

Probably bad timing, but I'd imagine any big city has free/cheap classical performances in local parks in the summer evenings. It's a good time out and possibly a decent family picnic if you can keep the kids quiet/still long enough. If the pieces are listed in advance, you can look it up in the Penguin Guide and get a sneak-preview/frame-of-reference.

Personal faves:
Gorecki's 3rd symphony
Avro Part - Fratres for piano and violin
Beethoven's 5th

It all depends on what you want. "Classical" is more diverse than rock or jazz.

I am not very knowledgeable about all the in's and out's of classical music. But one piece that I listen to over and over again is one I have mentioned before. Jean Sibelius' Violin Concerto in Dm. It is amazing.

Holst - The Planets. I don't know much about classical, but "Mars - The Bringer Of War" is badass shit. There's a reason why King Crimson used to perform this.

It's from this if anyone wants it:
