I love the Beatles, but i've liked them since forever, so i think it's a case of me getting a little tiny bit bored of them (I didn't really discover the Beach Boys till only a couple of years ago). I just love the Beach Boys' ironic attempt to create a perfect Utopian world in their music, Brian Wilson's endless pursuit of perfection and the representation of a perfect world that he never quite lived in.

I also think since it probably took longer for the Beach Boys influence to be felt, the Beatles' name has been sullied to me by many of their petty imitators.

Still, as a shallow teen surf band in their early years, i think the Beach Boys were much better than when the Beatles were a shallow brit pop band. There's very few early Beatles singles that i can stomach, whereas all the classic older Beach Boys singles still go down smooth for me, all sweetness and teenage optimism, in lyric and melody. Dennis was the only one that even surfed...

The Beatles' skill and immense volume of work makes them a relatively obvious choice as #1 for most people. Thus, they are also an obvious target of backlash. It's extremely easy to take them for granted, so people do. I too am bored with them, but unlike some others I don't hold that against them. They did their part.

I kinda think the opposite... the later "baroque" Beatles started to lose that "back beat you can't lose it.." and much of that stuff is now unlistenable to me... some of the early and middle period are perfect pop. The early surf-music Beach Boys were pretty forgettable.. the later experiments were genious. To me.

Sometimes I think I'm bored with them and then I put on one of their records and I'm like, "oh yeah, this is why they're better than eveyone else"

Of the two, I'd probably enjoy NOT listening to the Beach Boys more.

= my on-going plan as well. A little taste every once in awhile.

oh wait, is this poll about which band was better dressed or which band made better music? if it's which band made better music then it's the Beach Boys, obviously.

That's Harry's list - I'm just surprised Wilco got in there before Jobriath.

Dude... even I had to look up Jobriath... you are so esoteric you are unintelligible. Is your point I am old or that I am an old fag who likes glam rock? Or that I recently posted about Brian Protheroe... in any case Jobriath is a single, not a band. A whole different list (and yes, yes, Dylan is #1).

The Band is number 18 on my list... Pavement # 11... Broken Social Scene # 12...

On second thought, just send that pic to Mark Foley, and everything will take care of itself.

Preferring the Monkees to the Beatles is like preferring Blink 182 to Black Flag.
