My vote goes to Phil Collins.
Average (at best) voice
Not attractive (balding pseudo-mullet, paunchy, no fashion accumen)

Good songwriter, though.

Forget his Genesis connection. If the guy came along today... hell, he wouldn't come along today. They'd keep him shuttered away, FAR AWAY, from MTV in an office somewhere writing songs for John Mayer and such.

Who gets your vote?

Note: This ain't directed at you Swiateck, you just brought up the name.

Why is there so much hate for John Mayer? I mean I'm not a fan of most of his music but the guy can fucking RIP on guitar, he writes decent songs, and well, he got famous; so what? Player hatin'? :wanker:

Unlikely rock stars? Hmmm. I think even the most unlikely of rock stars had secret aspirations all along. I mean, when Mick was studying accounting at the London School of Econmics he was surely dreaming of his future exploits....

Shit, you could say the earliest "rock" players were the most unlikely because they had no rock stars to aspire to be. It was a crapshoot. Kinda like how being a professional athlete use to be more akin to running away and joining the circus than making a good living.

Don't get it twisted; I wasn't trying to hate on John Mayer with that comment. I just threw the name out as an example of someone who'd benefit from Collins' songwriting skills today since there's NO WAY Collins would be trotted out for mainstream consumption in today's image-conscious climate.

He ain't my cup of tea, but I can see where he has talent and that he'd appeal to lots of people.

No Haterade flowin' around these parts.

Sorry, that's LooGARese for he gets laid a lot.

(for hardcore scumbags like me, that gets respect)

Maybe I should just stop talking about anything but music and Krylon?

Edit: and MIKE JONES!!

Peter Gabriel's massive success with So might've been more unlikely than Collins, if only because he wrote weirdo music for most of his career, whereas Collins essentially rewrote Lionel Richie's solo repertoire and just looked like a weirdo.

Elton John is about the same level as Collins. Totally unlikely as a pop star.

I mean, there's a reason the dudes in Kiss got famous once they put the make up on.

Plus: what about ZZ Top? it still seems strange they were big video stars in the early 80s

Alsom aren't the Winter Bros. ALBINOS?!?

I hate John Mayer outout because i find the lyrics horrible and the music does nothing to move me. He may be a technically gifted guitar player but i have yet to hear anything by him that i didn't find outrageously poor. Buckethead is a great guitar player and most of his stuff is crap.

but i also dislike the Dave Matthews band so maybe i don't understand great music.

Maybe this guy doesn't fit the bill of being a pop star...more like a novelty act, but still.

wait is this guaged on looks alone? demeanor? lyrical content?
I'd say Mark E. Smith would be the best example, not that he's so much a pop star. But Jarvis Cocker is and that's pretty much just as good.

Yea, maybe you don't . Bloor's not saying that Matthew's and Mayer's music is great either dude. If I understand him correctly I think he's just sayin' that maybe Mayer shouldn't be lumped in with no-talent hacks like Meatloaf and Tiny Tim just because he got famous. MIKE JONES!!!

MIKE JONES!!!

Although you get props for the MIKE JONES!!!, calling Meatloaf a no-talent hack? Obviously you haven't seen the VH1 movie of the life of Meatloaf, tracking his rise from an average guy trying to get into a version of "Hair" up through a drug OD right before Bat Out Of Hell 2: Back Into Hell...

OK, so maybe I don't like his music that much, but I sure as hell enjoyed that biopic...

Better looking than Phil, but pretty much a bar band dishing up retreads of R&B songs.

We're talking most unlikely pop star here, Aural... Not most devistatingly beautiful.
