I agree that "I Will Sing You Songs" is perfect, but can't you guys hear the painful strain in James's voice on songs like "Gideon" and "One Big Holiday"?

I think we lack the reference point that you have, with the benefit of seeing 'em live, so I haven't really noticed that much. I will grant you that he does sound a little thin a times on some songs.

I just wish they would have played "Gideon" when I saw them! That, and the "Pureed Pussy/Frappeed Fetus" ditty.

I love MMJ, and the time me and jagged saw them last year was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

I'm guessing this new double album was probably recorded at or near the very end of their tour, because the band is absolutely at the top of their game, BUT Jim James's voice is completely shredded.

It's too bad they couldn't capture a show when his pipes were in better shape.

to be honest, i kinda like his voice a little rougher. he does strain at some times, but it's honest and live, and i prefer it not studio polished.

I'd normally agree with you, D, but the amazing thing about Jim James is that his voice is actually capable of perfection without the studio polish. He really can wail away without the rough edges...I just think whenever they recorded this, he was worn to the nub.

After listening to this again, even though I still think James's voice is too strained on a few tracks, I am now fully prepared to join the hyperbole. In fact, "Steam Engine" very well may be the single greatest live recording in rock history.

This "Dodante" is melting my face. The band picked the perfect time to put out a live record. Truly on top of their game.

Thanks, Timis. "Dondante" is now my Favorite Song To Make Love To of 2006 as well.

They were pretty great on July 3rd when i saw them here in Milwaukee despite playing to a crowd of douche bags.

Yeah, when me and jagged saw them here in Dallas last year, that was definitely the douchiest crowd I've ever been witness to.

Please tell me someone has this:
The band played a marathon three-and-a-half hour Bonnaroo set beginning at midnight June 16, 2006. Artists whose songs were covered for this show include The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Velvet Underground, The Who, The Band, The Rolling Stones, and The Misfits. A video of the show was available via webcast the following evening.

I saw the webcast and it confirmed that MMJ have a unique hold on the jugular of rock and roll... I have seen the future and it sings with its hair in its face. Only Wilco could challenge them for Americana pop supremecy. Spectacular

(and you never explained the royalty claptrap)

This double live by MMJ and the one Wilco put out a year ago are among the greatest live albums of all time. Heresy or genius? Or maybe soundboard recordings are better than ever. Nah, just great bands, live or studio.

Seems like forever since Z. Any word on a new album?

In the meantime, I just put together a single-disc "best of" MMJ, including my favorite songs (with plenty of GLARING OMISSIONS). Check it out...

Yeah, that and "Dancefloors" were hard to leave off. So was "One Big Holiday" and "O is the One That is Real" and "It Beats For You" and so on and so forth.

they were supposed to be releasing some Tennessee Fire/At Dawn demos, but that has kinda gone away now it seems....

and you definitely need 'o is the one that is real' on yer mix.

I don't want any more rehashing of existing material, be it live or demo. I want A NEW ALBUM.

"O" was the very last cut. It put me 1:15 over in length, so it had to go.
