Daryl Hall - Sacred Songs (1980)

Produced by Robert Fripp, of all people. Imagine a better produced (meaning much less thin) Hall and Oates with Eno-like soundscapes. Some songs (that Fripp wrote or co-wrote) even sound like Hall fronting a late 70s version of King Crimson!

It's a bizarre pairing, but the songwriting is so strong and the production is so good that it's been in constant rotation for the last several weeks.

RIYL: Hall and Oates, 70s-80s King Crimson, Brian Eno's solo records

Sacred Songs was supposed to be a triumverate with Exposure and one of Peter Gabriel's solo albums, but Hall's management panicked about it.

Yeah.

One of these days I'll do a sendspace of Fripp's Exposure with the five bonus Hall tracks on it.

I've got that one too. It's not quite as strong as the Hall album IMO. Also, weird thing about the song "North Star" - it was later re-written as the KC song "Matte Kudasai" with the Belew outfit, which I just think is sort of weird.

I just need to get the Gabriel album now. Maybe I'll run out and get that one at lunch.

I'm rolling my eyes, but I'm also gonna need to hear this.
And this is why:

You magnificent bastard.

Exposure has the best version of "Here Comes The Flood" of the many versions Gabriel recorded.

I think he (they?) are Belgian. Sound like The Notwist with bit more punch. Really, really like them.

I agree that this version of "Here Comes the Flood" is amazing.

It's a lot of fun.

i'll have to check my purchase list, but off the top of my head right now it's:

john cale.paris 1919

not at all what i was expecting...to me it's a much more listenable antony with some hints of belle and even some sebastian.

That's a tough one, but maybe Joni Mitchell meets Jonathan Richman? With some Fripp guitar thrown in for good measure on a song or two.

Daryl Hall has one of the Top 20 male voices of all time.

Brilliant description... with a dash of Natalie Merchant and a HerSpace hootenany. ... only I love Joni Mitchell and Jonathan Richman and really, really hated the Roches.

<------Really likes Hall & Oates "Abandoned Luncheonette"

Oh, and as for good, non-2006 pickups, I can't stop listening to Crooked Fingers "Dignity & Shame" Had no idea what I'd been missing.

This is a fairly representitive taste of the record, despite the eclecticism:
"The Married Men"
Code:

It's a pretty diverse album, but if you like this song, I'd say that it's safe to say that you'll like the record. And vice-versa.

This intrigues me---can't find it on line (unless it's on the iTunes music store, which I can't access from here). Any chance of a YSI?

Great call.

My best non-2006 pickup so far this year has been Art Brut. I freakin' love those wankers!

Steely Dan's Countdown to Ecstasy just edging out several others. I love that art work as well. I wonder what the one guy is looking at (or is it two), as ecstasy is about to happen?

That's really weird because I got into just about every other Steely Dan album this year, especially the Royal Scam and Katy Lied. I take it you recommend? I can't stand the song "Boddhisatva" but I really like "My Old School". I've never heard the rest.
