That's really weird because I got into just about every other Steely Dan album this year, especially the Royal Scam and Katy Lied. I take it you recommend? I can't stand the song "Boddhisatva" but I really like "My Old School". I've never heard the rest.

It's considered one of their classics with Acclaimed Music having it listed as the 15th best album from 1973. This is my first album bought from them (outside a greatest hits album), so I'm looking forward to hearing others.

Not sure if this is my favorite oldie from this year but is the one I have been listening to the most recently.

I finally understand what he is looking at, it's more women. That was driving me crazy.

I think he (they?) are Belgian. Sound like The Notwist with bit more punch. Really, really like them.

This intrigues me---can't find it on line (unless it's on the iTunes music store, which I can't access from here). Any chance of a YSI?

Nope. Not on iTunes, either. YSI greatly appreciated.

Not particularly old...it came out in 1997, but I just discovered it this year and have spun it more than a lot of '06 releases.

I spaced on this, and it's far too late now. I'll get it up tomorrow morning. Thanks for being patient.

For me 'Pearl Of The Quarter' lets that album down badly otherwise it would be up there with the best of them.

Listened to it again this morning, and, accidentally, it is perfect for this thread because not only does it sound like Notwist, it sounds (to me) like the first couple Eno solo records. That's the good news... the bad news is I am clueless about uploading and YSI... may give it to my partner as a Saturday chores thing...

Hey, I just started listening to Steely Dan, too, but I think my initial entusiasm has already died down a lot. Of the four albums I have, though, Countdown is probably my favorite (also the first one I got).

My ranking of them:
1. Countdown to Ecstacy
2. The Royal Scam
3. Pretzel Logic
4. Katy Lied

I can't decide if I want to get any more of their albums or not. Maybe Can't Buy a Thrill, but I dunno.

That makes it even more intriguing to me harry---thanks for trying the YSI. Any idea where I might be able to purchase this album on line?

I always felt 'Gaucho' was/is underrated. One of the sleaziest, fucked up, morally reprehensible albums ever released. During the recording Walter Becker's girlfriend was found dead at his home from a heroin overdose and Becker himself recorded the album in a wheelchair after being knocked over by a taxi.

Me too. It's the best single-album encapsulation of everything that makes Steely Dan great.
