Just came across the AP wire at work. Google will buy You Tube for 1.65 billion in stock.

Why buy them when they could probably start their own similar service for less.

Dayum! Wonder how Google will handle the inherited piracy issues.

These dudes who own the company are 27 and 29. And the reason I think you buy the company instead of starting your own is cause Youtube is everywhere and they have contracts with MTV, E! and others. It would be really difficult to cut into their market share and a good match for a company like Google.

Domination via monopoly. Show competitions the power of Google dollar.

It may seem like an outrageous price, but given that they paid for You Tube with $1.65B in stock and their market cap increased by over $2B today, I'd say that it appears to be working out pretty well for Google so far.

Google Video has failed to gain market share because they never created a social community around it, a la Youtube. And unlike Napster, YouTube has removed content on request, so they've immunized themselves from lawsuits, because they can claim fair use under the Digital Millenium Act or whatever it was called that was passed by Congress in '96. And now they have the arsenal of Google lawyers to combat any litigation. Good move Google. Having said that, remember the Broadcast.com fiasco that made Mark Cuban a Gazillionaire. The guy from theglobe.net must be pissed that he was five years too soon. That was a great social networking site pre-broadband in the red states.

Damn. Missed my chance.
YouTube is the hottest thing in the world right now, even hotter than nuclear bombs.

Duh!.. youtube is not as hot as Congressional Foleygate. The nuclear bombs are still underground- again even less hot.

I'd imagine the point of paying stock instead of cash is so the existing youtube people can stay on operating the site for awhile. Keeps Google from having to figure out how to make the thing work themselves. And rewards the youtube founders with a shitload of stock they don't necessarily have to cash in at this precise moment.

Stock went up a little today which will hopefully continue tomorrow allowing me to cash in with decent profit on my two shares. That's all I really care about regarding this news.

Also, about the piracy stuff, I read today that they already have deals with Warner (I think) and Universal over music videos being posted so I imagine part of the deal was knowing they had a lot of the piracy issues under wraps.

kind of a waste for google

basicaly they inherit the enormous bandwidth costs, a name, and some shitty emo kid videos

they couldve just sunk 10% of the funds into making google video decent

I think they tried- just didn't work. So they did the "if you can't beat them.." bit. Also sure if Google had'nt made the move their better (more than capable competitors) microsoft, Yahoo or whoever owns myspace now woud have.

In theory, yes, but the reality of the marketplace is that they bought THE NAME. You see, at this point, it doesn't matter if someone else comes out with a video service that's WAY better than YouTube, because the masses don't care about quality -- they just want to use what everybody else uses. This point will be proven when someone eventually comes along with a product much better than iPod, but that hardly makes a dent in Apple's market share, because everyone just wants an "iPod."

So, do you purchase tissue for your bathroom, or "Kleenex"?

there's now an online rumor that google will by us (Level3) next since we previously signed a contract with youtube to deliver their content.
