I can't figure out how to just use VLC like a normal DVD player (e.g., when you put the DVD in, it automatically brings up the menu). Tips?

Well, on OS X, I guess it would be possible to write a script to launch it and open the DVD by default. Then in System Prefs you could select that as the default action. Depends on what system you're on, though.
