I'd like to think he's all that and a crab roll but the more I hear about the artistic license he takes in his movies I'm becoming a sceptic.

Oscars seek to avoid contreversy. That is why neither Fahrenheit nor Passion were nominated. That and the other films were openly better. I feel that the snub for best documentary was silly. I mean Moore's films are solely responsible for the surge in popularity of the genre.

Well he won the Palme D'horre(sp?) which is equally if not more prestigious in my mind as an Oscar.

Seriously! i remember when Forest Gump beat pulp fiction for best bicture being an epiphany for me in realizing that the oscars really had no connection to my being in the audience.

I know Moore oherstates, overhypes, and sometimes lies. But his film is a documentary. If documentary did not have some opinion to them they would be bland. It is just that Moore's are pretty blantant. But it is not as if he is a partisan Democratic cheerleader. In Bowling fo Columbine he criticizes President Clinton.

Not by dictionary definition, but nothing truly is anyway. If anything, he's helped spark dialogue on just how much editorial slant is involved in every documentary and news presentation. He might make some other films look academic by comparison, but ultimately he really has led the resurgence in popularity of "documentaries" even though none of them may be strictly factual presentations with no editorializing. The idea of a "pure" documentary is pretty naive since the editing process of putting together any film involves a conscious choice of what is shown and where.

If I remember right, earlier this year he asked the Academy to not consider his movie for Best Doc.

When our movie writer interviewed him last week, I'm pretty sure he said he hadn't entered/pushed for a Best Doc nod and was only interested in the Best Pic category.

Hubris, meet Mike. Mike, hubris.

I'm pretty sure the squazillion bucks he's earned from the movie will help heal his poor wittle broken heart.

I think the moment for me was when Driving Miss Daisy won for best picture and Do the Right Thing wasn't even nominated.

Can you imagine the reaction on FNC & the rightwing sect of the media if he did get nominated for best doc & Passion didn't for best foreign language? The Academy had to nominate both or neither & if they nominated both it would have been such a distraction. Moore hardly makes documentaries anyways.

9/11 did win the Palme D'or last year. Tarantino headed the jury last year & this year one of my favorite directors, Emir Kustrica is heading the Jury. Kustrica who's won the Palme D'or twice & best director at Cannes said "Now it is my turn to defend the festival's values. I have given myself the mission, as president of the jury, to put aesthetics and art at the heart of the show." He's pissed about getting snubbed last year for "Life Is A Miracle" & F 9/11 winning especially with someone from Hollywood heading the jury. So there's some resentment even in Europe that Moore won.

I thought he was ineligable due to him releasing his movie on DVD so early and doing some deal so it could be shown on tv before the election.

I think he tried to get it on TV before the election but failed. Putting the movie on DVD before the nominations doesn't affect anything...where you run into trouble is when you air your movie on TV before it's in theatres.
