(CNN) -- The nominations for the 77th annual Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning from Beverly Hills, California.

The nominees for best picture are: "The Aviator," "Finding Neverland," "Million Dollar Baby," "Ray" and "Sideways."

The nominees for best actor are: Don Cheadle ("Hotel Rwanda"), Johnny Depp ("Finding Neverland"), Leonardo DiCaprio ("The Aviator") Clint Eastwood ("Million Dollar Baby") and Jamie Foxx ("Ray").

The nominees for best actress are: Annette Bening ("Being Julia"), Catalina Sandino Moreno ("Maria Full of Grace"), Imelda Staunton ("Vera Drake"), Hilary Swank ("Million Dollar Baby") and Kate Winslet ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind").

The nominees for best supporting actor are: Alan Alda ("The Aviator"), Thomas Haden Church ("Sideways"), Jamie Foxx ("Collateral"), Morgan Freeman ("Million Dollar Baby") and Clive Owen ("Closer").

The nominees for best supporting actress are: Cate Blanchett ("The Aviator"), Laura Linney ("Kinsey"), Virginia Madsen ("Sideways"), Sophie Okonedo ("Hotel Rwanda") and Natalie Portman ("Closer").

The nominees for best director are: Clint Eastwood ("Million Dollar Baby"), Martin Scorsese ("The Aviator"), Taylor Hackford ("Ray"), Alexander Payne ("Sideways") and Mike Leigh ("Vera Drake").

The 77th annual Academy Awards are scheduled for February 27. The show will air on ABC.

I am a little disappointed in some of these selections, although I have not seen some of these movies yet.

It'd be a trip if Foxx won both best actor and best supporting actor.

Nice to see Madsen getting recognized. Her looks have caused her to be critically dismissed for many years.

Clint Eastwood for best actor? Granted I haven't seen Million Dollar Baby yet but I can't imagine he does anything different than what he's done in his last 15-20 movies. That should be interesting to see who wins that category.....lot of good performances.

Seems like most of the committee only watched Sideways, Million Dollar Baby, and the Aviator.

So I guess Sideways is this year's indie/art house powerhouse. I would have liked to see Michel Gondry get a Best Director nomination, though.

edit: I loved Sideways. My second favorite movie of last year behind Eternal Sunshine.

For those who saw Sideways...Did Giamatti get snubbed?

I didn't see it, but his lack of nomination was one of the 2 things that surprised me. Especially since Haden Church got a Supporting nod.

The other surprise was "The Incredibles" getting a screenplay nomination.

Overall it seems like a pretty good, credible list.

meh.

has anyone else witnessed a rise in wine purchases on the part of their friends after seeing 'sideways'? i don't think i'd seen my housemates even hold a glass until the days after we saw the movie.

Yes, but she is gorgeous. Oh, my, fell in love with her back in the 80's in Electric Dreams.

I thought Clive Owen was the best thing about Closer - he did a great job. Giamatti got snubbed - Haden Church was ok but not THAT great - must have been an off year for supporting actors. I also thought DiCaprio was merely serviceable. I thought the guy from Motorcycle Diaries was awesome.

I'd say Giamatti got snubbed, but it probably won't matter, because I'm pretty sure Jamie Foxx will win anyway. I haven't seen "Ray", so I don't know if he deserves it, but critics and other award committees sure seem to think so.

My Picks:
Best Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett (will win); Virginia Madsen (should win)
Best Supporting Actor: Thomas Haden Church (will win); Clive Owen (should win)
Best Actress: Hilary Swank (will win); Imelda Staunton (should win)
Best Actor: Jamie Foxx (will win); ??? (should win)
Best Director: Martin Scorsese (will win); ??? (should win)
Best Picture: Million Dollar Baby (will win); Sideways (should win)

Paul Giamatti was robbed. That's all I have to say.

Disagree with supporting actor picks for will and should win. I think your should wins WILL win. I think Thomas Haden Church may be a longshot seeing as he hasn't been in many movies at all, meaning he hasn't paid his film dues yet. I think Clive Owen will take supporting actor.

As for Cate Blanchett and Virginia Madsen-Cate is deserving because she was plain and simple ROBBED by Gwyneth several years back of that Best Actress win. But, Virginia has more then paid her dues, she's been around for 20 years or so now and she may have been merely just a B-lister but she was top of the B-list and the critics have been foaming at the mouth over her role, her comeback (she hadn't gone anywhere) in Sideways. I think come Oscar night we all may be pleasantly surprised and she may take the Oscar home. And I damn well hope so.

The rest are pretty damn predictable. And I agree with them. Rather I agree they'll end up winning.

I'm disappointed that Hilary Swank is such a lock. I would LOVE to see Kate Winslet win for , plus that girl has acted her heart out in every film she's ever done and mostly been the only damn good thing out of some of those movies. She very much deserves it. It would be nice to see the academy reward her for an emotional and eccentric character/performance then the hard edge dramatic Hilary Swank stuff.

I think Giamattis was snubbed if the Oscars don't get smarter with their nominations they may become as irrelevant as the.........gulp Grammys's Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrghhhh!!!!

Do the best film nominations always have to go to movies that were made with the intention of being best film nominees? I say "Shaun of the Dead."
