they say it's a "pompous, overreaching monstrosity." what do y'all think?

i'd say that's a pretty accurate review of pitchfork, actually.

Do it once, be praised for your brilliance...
Do it twice, be reviled for your ambition...

That is, unless you're Interpol.

ok, but back to the point of the thread...i mostly agree with the critical elements of the review, though i think it was written in a fashion that (mostly) did little to critique the actual content of the record and more the idea of it, in the grand scheme of the Trail of Dead's recorded output.

i still think "will you smile again" is pretty good, but things really do drop off from there.

This album just hasn't done it for me. There are a few songs I like, but I def. miss Trail of Dead's prior work. This album is kinda like Good News for People Who Love Bad News... not terrible, but just a huge letdown compared to prior work.

I think the review was right on; trail of dead are going to get nailed on this album, because it's neither what anyone hoped they would do, nor does it retain the qualities that made source tags and codes so good. Strangely, the album has grown on me a little bit since I first got it, but that basically means I like two songs now instead of one.

When you average the two, you get a 7.0 for each, which is what I thought ST&C was. Maybe I would think the same thing about the new one.
