To be fair, I'm teaming that with my hate of Gensis to form my opinion. I realize that it's unfair but I'm just saying that I've never heard anything that sparked my interest to dig deeper. There's alot of music that I've still haven't heard and I have to prioritize. Is it all proggish?

If you need a fresh listen to Gabriel, you should check out Secret World Tour live, one of the best performed/recorded live documents ever.

Just the rhythm section will knock you on your ass, Tony Levin (yeah he can wank, but not here. Here he just plays the right bass line for the song with so much of the right feel) and Manu Katche (sp?) who's just insane.

Levin is almost never a wanker, he is just an accessory to other people's wanking

but yeah, top three bassist of all time

I have the 12" version of 'In Your Eyes' I wouldn't part with it if Google made me an offer.

I don't know. I hate all incarnations of Gensis and I've (fairly or unfairly ) pigeoned holed Gabriel into l80's VH1 sound of Sledgehammer & In Your Eyes. Two songs that suck. To me it's a hair off of Toto- Africa.

All that never pushed me to dig deeper into his catalog.

Though I'm not sure how you get Toto out of "In Your Eyes" (which I love), songs like "Moribund The Burgemeister," ""Family Snapshot," and "San Jacinto" bear no resemblance to slick VH1 templates.

Gabriel is not Bonnie Raitt or Steve Winwood, but even THEY are better than VH1 on some of their non-hits. You will not, however, find any Michael Bolton/Michael McDonald-isms on PG 1-3.

Gabriel is a victim of what-radio-would-play-at-the-time syndrome. But you can no more judge him by "Sledgehammer" than you can evaluate The Cure by "Lovecats."

You must have heard "Solsbury Hill," "Games Without Frontiers," "Shock The Monkey," and "Digging In The Dirt" at some point. Those all got and still get considerable cross-format radio play and show what he's about more than "Steam," "Big Time," or "Sledgehammer."

I'll post "Here Comes The Flood" and a couple other Gabriel tracks when I get home, maybe illuminate what I mean a little more.

So true, and even after Gabriel left there are some tracks like "Blood On The Rooftops" that are remarkable. In fact, I don't think Genesis sucked royally until Invisible Touch. Even Duke has some very good tracks.

Even though I certainly don't hate the Gabriel-era Genesis, I'd still rather listen to a team of sled dogs peeing on my CD racks than any Genesis ever again.

And those first 2 solo Gabriel albums I don't mind. The third one had a couple good songs, like the aforementioned "Through the Wire" (notable mostly due to Paul Weller's guitar) - but for me "Games Without Frontiers" is right up there alongside "Total Eclipse of the Heart" on the annoying scale.

I hate Genesis more than Reo Speedwagon, Journey, Supertramp and Abba combined. I was thinking about throwing Toto in there but that would have tipped the scales. I can't think of a band off the top of my head that I like less.

The beginning of the end was the song "Abacab". That said, most of even their eponymous album is good.

Trick of the Tail is one of Genesis' best, and Duke is a great album. Wind and Wuthering and And Then There Were Three are more uneven, but certainly not bad.

I'm not quite sure what about Genesis in particular makes you hate them so much. Do you hate Yes, King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer as well?

Can't speak for Billy, but I do. I've never hear any prog that I like that I can think of off hand.

Absolutely, I'm an equal opportunity hater. I might hate Yes more if I'd been force fed them as much as Genesis in college.

It's hard not to put Jamerson in the team photo, especially after watching "Standing in the Shadows of Motown". McCartney is also way up there, probably rounding out my top 5.

That said, I have to shrug my shoulders and say I'm a product of my own sick disease:

1) Chris Squire
2) John Wetton
3) Tony Levin

Honorable mention for Bruce Foxton.

Well, I can understand it now. If you just dislike prog in general, I can totally dig it. I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I blame my parents for giving me a healthy dose of the CD "Classic Yes" circa 1987-88. That's what got me started on this whole thing.

My dad used to take the Yes album "Fragile" to electronics stores when shopping for stereo equipment because he felt the song "Roundabout" had the best highs and lows to compare equipment with.

I also hold that Supertramp is another much-maligned band that had some tremendous non-hits. Songs like "Even In The Quietest Moments" and "Crime Of the Century" are personal favorites.

But then, I had many prog-related albums long before I knew indie rock and like a lot of non-hit stuff by artists whose hits have been played to death over the years.

Hell, there's even some Alan Parsons Project tracks ("Old And Wise" for instance) I like as much as any indie group's tracks.

The prog contempt on this board is fairly intense.

But that's fine.

I maintain there's a hell of a difference between good prog like Gentle Giant and horrifying shit like Rennaisance, though.

I concur wholeheartedly. I don't have II by the way, but I am a sucker for Security. I also thought his soundtracks for The Last Temptation of Christ and Rabbit Proof Fence were quite good.

Spade, I didn't say "Alan Parson Project" I said some non-hit Alan Parsons. And there are indeed some that I like a lot. Colin Frickin' Blunstone sings lead on some of them, in case you didn't know.
