i really really like it, but it took some time to grow on me. the criticisms that i hear are the same ones as always about him not being able to sing worth shit.

i really like his voice. it'd be like tom waits if he just calmed down and drank thismuch less. the songwriting is really good on this one... the lyrics are still repetitive, but, yknow, its his thing. he really filled out the sounds with trumpets and crap. i like it better than the self-titled. chase, do you think its better than his first one? (solo, not archers of loaf)

what was the first one, crooked fingers or bring on the snakes? to me it's way better than bring on the snakes, probably on par with red devil dawn and not as good as crooked fingers. i really favor the slow, melancholy stuff from that album though, the poppier stuff (like "Call to love") is the stuff that grows on me.

I wanna say that Bring on the Snakes was the first one.

Nope - the S/T came out first. Interviewed Eric Bachman right before that one came out and, for unrelated reasons, that's still my favorite one...

I think Eric Bachman sounds like Neil Diamond with a hint of Tom Waits, but the Diamond thing also comes from Crooked Fingers covering Solitary Man.
Bachman scared the hell out of me with a megaphone when I was standing next to my friend and Conor Oberst at a Crooked Fingers/David Dondero and Azure Ray show in Omaha. He could have killed me if he was an assassin.

That's a great album cover. I can't wait till this is officially released. Merge is putting it out on vinyl. Huzzah.

Favourite track so far: Destroyer. I love how he says plaintively "Destroyer" and then some kick ass guitar squelch ensues for a few. Awesome.

This is my only Crooked Fingers release so far, but it won't lonely be for long. Like katie, I also love it, and agree that it has FEELING. Either this or the new Low album will be the next review posted to Hip Displeasure.

the new m. ward is even more old-timey... it's meant to be. cohesive whole, although i can't immediately say there's songs that REALLY stick out to me, like the other records have..

"hi-fi" immediately stuck out for me...love that song.

i've got dignity and shame here at work with me and am really looking forward to listening later.

I totally agree with this. I've listened to it many many times over but none of it seems to stick in my brain. None of the songs are outstanding but the whole record has a good feel to it. For this reason I think it'll be a good one to throw on the turntable on sunday morning but it's not an all the time record. It doesn't really measure up to Transfiguration of Vincent quite yet.
