Plus I think it's a very good thing for a board like Obner to have Radcliffery contempt for a music form while there's Spadian love for it.

It means we don't have to be swayed from our aural convictions if we see no reason to be.

<---Time to spin a Dire Straits CD now. Maybe later that Peanut Butter Conspiracy rekkid.

Billy G.... how recently have you listened to "lamb" or "sellling england by the pound".... later genesis was so insipid I can understand why some might have filters...

I do have to say that one of my old college roommates made me go see a genesis tribute band recreate the whole of "lamb"... bunch of old white men bobbing their heads to Rael at the Masonic is SF. It was the most ludicrous, noxious thing I've been to in many many years... Truly it was like a comedy sketch.

All prog shouldn't be lumped in together as equally detestable... this is weak thinking, IMHO. To me Yes and ELP are unlistenable... were then and are more nauseating now. King Crimson has some powerful and engaging tracks....

Do you hate weather report? gentle giant? popul vuh? can? do you hate anything with polyrhythyms and more than three chords?

Currently, do you hate Unwound, Kinski, Trail..., Tortoise, Camofluer...

If you need a fresh listen to Gabriel, you should check out Secret World Tour live, one of the best performed/recorded live documents ever.

Just the rhythm section will knock you on your ass, Tony Levin (yeah he can wank, but not here. Here he just plays the right bass line for the song with so much of the right feel) and Manu Katche (sp?) who's just insane.

Unfortunately it's only "sort of" live - reportedly lots of studio touch ups on that thing, and it's even presented as a "document of a live concert" rather than a concert. But it's still one of my favorite video (or, um, "DVDs" now) and "live" albums regardless of its dubious nature as such - it's just an incredible statement of Gabriel at that time. Also check out the Growing Up DVD for another pretty amazing show. (Still Growing Up isn't quite as good, unfortunately.)

I gotta agree with the others - Tony's rarely a wanker. He's always the guy for just the right bass line everywhere I hear him. Rock solid, tasteful, and instantly recognizable, not something you can say about many bassists these days. Can't wait to hear what he cooks up with the latest incarnation of King Crimson.

Of the three solo albums, II seems the strongest to my ears, which is strange because it's considered the weakest of the three based on all the reviews I've read

My dad used to take the Yes album "Fragile" to electronics stores when shopping for stereo equipment because he felt the song "Roundabout" had the best highs and lows to compare equipment with.

You know, you HAVE to write a short story about this.

Interesting you would make the Gabriel-Toto comparison, as Toto's "Rosanna" was about Porcaro's girlfriend at the time, Rosanna Arquette, who eventually left him for...

PETER GABRIEL.

Small world, ain't it?

Oh, and while I generally enjoy the bulk of Gabriel's solo work, I will die a happy man if I never again hear that fucking "Solisbury Hill" song, regardless of Sketchy proximity. The next DJ who plays it is going to be sent a bomb that goes BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Oh, you're just bitter that you didn't have Chiang Ching and Lin Tai Yu around to play Capture the Flag when you were a Lil' Rads.

Still one of my favorite pop songs, no matter how many times I hear it.

I'm appalled and shocked at the number of "Top 3 All-Time Greatest Bassist" lists in this thread without The Ox. FOR SHAME, OBNER!!!

Back to your Alan Parsons post from earlier in the thread, "Wouldn't Wanna Be Like You" is a fantastic song.

I've got to pull the Drinky/Kingfish card and say I'm hardly an expert on prog or genesis but I haven't liked anything I've heard so its hardly worth my exploring further.

As far as the specifics...not a fan of can...don't know gentle giant or popul vuh...heard some clips of a weather report song that I liked but don't know that I ever heard an entire song but I know Joe Z. from his work with Cannonball Adderley enough to respect him. I like Unwound and Trail of the Dead. Don't like Kinski or Tortoise or at least what I've heard from them.

The three bassists that turned my head the most when I heard 'em - Entwistle, Geddy, and Levin. And they still give me the same thrill today, having heard them hundreds and hundreds of times.

I hate a lot of stuff. Just not the precise stuff several other people my age here hate. Also tend to not hate certain artists carte blanche, just certain songs. Despise particular songs by certain artists but like other ones. Other artists, haven't got much use for at all. More a matter of certain people here hating things I like than of me liking everything.

For instance, per Gabriel, "The Barry Williams Show" is rather dire. But in a world where there is so much worse, I've not got much desire to actively despise it.
