As I continue going thru my collection and giving plays to stuff I played once or never played at all, i uncovered another gem, that I am pissed that i didn't give proper attention to.....

MOLASSES
The earthy space rock outfit Molasses is yet another project to sprawl from the roots of Canadian art-rock moguls, Godspeed You Black Emperor. Built around songwriter Scott Chernoff, Molasses is comprised of a revolving set of musicians centered in Montreal, Quebec who Chernoff first gathered together in 2000 to record You'll Never Be Well No More. Molasses quickly followed this release up with Trilogie: Toil & Peaceful Life for their second release of 2000, then took some time off, presumably to focus on other projects as many members of the Molasses collective are involved with other ventures such as Fly Pan Am and the Boxhead Ensemble. In 2003, Chernoff again gathered his friends and put out Slow Messe and followed it in 2004 with Trouble at Jinx Hotel.

"Trouble at the Jinx Hotel" (not the best review, but i love this record so far)
Molasses' fourth record, Trouble at Jinx Hotel, impulsively grew from its original intention as a sparse solo release by ringleader Scott Chernoff. On a whim, Chernoff invited 15 musicians to back his cache of new songs and had the group improvise arrangements around them, and though the result is at times quite lovely, the record suffers from the same musical approach being recycled for each of the ten tracks — an approach that is severely lacking in dynamics. Trouble at Jinx Hotel would have likely stood on stronger legs if its initial concept was upheld as a solo release, since the songwriting is good and direct enough that the songs would have held up very well alone, but as it stands, the extremely reserved primary vision of Chernoff's minimalism chokes beneath a mass of musicians apparently reluctant to tamper with or actively build upon the initial feel of the songs. In other words, by piling unnecessary atmospherics on top, the songs became buried and unapproachable. There are times that the album shines, as on the watery "You Can't Win," but the texture is so stagnant — especially for a cast with so many instruments at its disposal — that finding the truly inspired moments is a chore. At best, Trouble at Jinx Hotel is an album for meditation purposes; at worst it is modified easy listening wallpaper for the indie rock community and is difficult to understand from a group that clearly has much to offer.

I have Touble at the Jinx Hotel and I listened to it once a long time ago. Then when I got my new computer and was putting all my cds onto it I started listening again. I listened to it about 5 times and realized that I hadn't given it a good chance before. Or my tastes had been altered enough that it hit me as a quality cd.

Typically I will give any side project of GY!BE a listen just to see what it's like. This one went over my head at first. Definitely enjoy this album now.
