--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The one I got from the thrift store for ten bucks doesn't work now after a month of use so I'm thinking about upgrading to a new recordable cd player.

Any suggestions? All of the big box stores around here (Circuit City, Best Buy) only have a Sony one for $299 that has a very unfriendly user interface that I don't like. So I've sort of resigned myself to try to find something online to fit my needs which is: a somewhat respectable quality electronic manufacturer, priced at around $200 or so.

So what do you think? Am I being realistic? Where do you suggest I look for one of these that will ship to me here in Hawaii?

Why recordable?

Seems like you can get a much better cd player, cheaper, if you don't need it to record (presumably because you record discs on something else, like a pc).

Plus you have to buy those expensive music-only CDRs for those CD player-burners*. They won't use the regular CDRs that you can buy dirt-cheap for your computer.

*Unless something has changed and the RIAA isn't requiring this anymore. Ha ha, yeah right. I'm funny sometimes.

Definitely, and the recorders don't have the flexibility and options of a computer burner/software.

I've not bought a new CD player for 12 years but maybe that tells you something about Marantz CD players.

I was expecting it to conk out just then but it didn't.

Thanks for all the responses guys but CAN ANYONE GIVE ME SOME RECOMMENDATIONS HERE?!!

The reason why I want this is so I can easily record some stuff I have on vinyl and cassette. Yeah, I know there's ways of doing this through my computer with better software support.

I have a Sony (RCD-W10), and hardly ever use it for recording. It's just a PITA to use, but now that my computer only burns discs sporadically, I may have to start using it. But I probably won't.

The argument that the blanks are too expensive is no longer applicable. You can find them for cheap; granted, not as cheap as computer discs, but still about 2x as much ($10 for 25 or thereabouts, on sale).

I still use my MiniDisc player/recorder more. It's so much easier than the stand-alone burner, and more fun (write song titles! mix songs up after you've recorded the disc! erase a song & add another! Re-record up to a million times! etc, bla bla). The CD burner will burn in half-time, but it's still slow. It's harder to get the CDs to play in some players, too.

I dunno. $300 sounds like a lot to me, but then again, I paid full boat ($600) for a Walkman DAT player when they first came out.

I just don't think you'll use it as much as you think you will. 99% of the time I just use it to play discs. Having 2 disc bays is cool- you can load one up & have it ready to go when the first disc quits. Wheee!

Just my 2 cents (.05 CAN).
