I just ran out and bought Dead Can Dance 'A Passage In Time' because I enjoyed the movie 'Baraka' so much that I wanted something similiar I could listen to and the store didn't have the 'Baraka' OST. Speaking of 'Baraka', that movie fucking killed me. One of the most emotionally powerful films I've seen in the last year. Any DCD fans?

My first post is pretty vague...let me expand. Baraka is a documentary on life and it's enviroment. It depicts images from around the world, some jovial and some desperate and everything inbetween. There is no dialogue or commentary during the entire film, but there is a score of worldish music. There really isn't a need for any commentary because the images speak for the film. The images depict nature, war, religion, tribal ritual, commerce etc. I highly recommend renting it if you have a chance. As for The Dead Can Dance, they did a couple tracks for the film. I've never owned a DCD album and I thought I'd take a chance on a greatest hits album of sorts due to DCD involvement in the film. So I bought the album on a hope and a prayer.

I don't have the music.

But yes, Baraka is one of the most amazing pieces of film I have seen.

Two bands I didn't pay attention to years back because I wrongly assumed they'd be pretentious goth-rock are Dead Can Dance and This Mortal Coil. Love both of them now.

Tell me more about this mortal coil.

So far I'm really enjoying the DCD album. it's definitely not the type of music I'd normally reach for, so I feel as if I have expanded my horizons a bit today.

I don't know much about This Mortal Coil, but I like DCD. Check out the 4AD back catalog. I think a lot of similar bands were on that label.

This Mortal Coil pretty much ARE 4AD, since they were founded by label head Ivo Watts-Russell. Many 4AD artists have been featured on TMC albums.

RIYL Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, Wolfgang Press, etc.

Seconding the voices here on DCD and This Mortal Coil.

Of the three TMC cd's I think "Blood" is the best.
All three of them are filled with great guest vocalists that you would be surpised at who all took part in the Ivo / 4AD machine.

Of the Dead Can Dance CD's. My favorites are "The Serpent's Egg", "Aion", "Into the Labyrinth". I saw them live in Chicago on their "Toward the Within" Tour and it was amazing. Lisa Gerrard was just devasting.

Their last CD Spiritchaser wasn't as good to me.

It is great music for any nightime of year....

Dead Can Dance have some excellent videos, too. "The Carnival Is Over" is a particular favorite.

I recommend Koyaanisqatsi, and Powaqqatsi if you like Baraka. They were filmed by the same person as Baraka and feature soundtracks by Philip Glass. There is a third movie in the series, Naqoyqatsi, that I'd like to see but haven't yet.
