As promised this past April, popular and influential 90s "alternative rock" act Smashing Pumpkins recently entered the studio to begin on their first new album since 2000.

Drummer Jimmy Chamberlain has posted some updates, including naming some of the band's collaborators on the project:

Quote:
Its been a hectic week for JC as we have been tracking drums non stop. Things are sounding fantastic. Tracking drums is a bit like going to another planet for four or five or nine minutes. We recently finished up working with Roy Thomas Baker, (Queen, The Cars!), Working with RTB was not only an honor, but also one of the best musical experiences we have ever had. We are currently working with Terry Date (Pantera, Soundgarden!) and that is going great as well. The universe has a way of letting you know that things are right by introducing people like RTB and Terry into the fold. It..s all part of one big cosmic journey, in so that everyone reading this is hitching their silver chord to the Great Pumpkin Space Train! Hope this helps clear some things up for you.

To date, only Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin are confirmed for the project.

Great Pumpkin Space Train? Seriously?

No more metaphors. Just rawk.

Siamese Dream is probably in my top 5 albums of all time (disclosure, I was 19 when it came out) and I thought Adore was stellar, but Machina seemed to be a calculated response to the backlash that was heaped on Adore. Corgan is way too concerned with how he is perceived, or at least he is post-Mellon Collie. When he was on Stern back in 2000, he addressed the impending break-up of the Pumpkins thusly, "I am tired of trying to compete with the Britney's of the world." Stern was damn near apoplectic and essentially said he would regret ending the band. Corgan really was/is the anti-Cobain in the sense that he craves the limelight. Unlike other alt.-grunge contemporaries of the early nineties the Pumpkins were refreshingly comfortable with embracing their success. They aspired to be the '90s version of arena rock bands from a generation before. Perhaps I am over-analyzing it, but Corgan views musicianship as a competition, and when Cobain bowed out of that competition they were left standing as the champs of rock in '95. He no longer had any worthy adversaries and thus lamented the fact that teenie-bop ascended as the zeitgeist of the late '90s. At the end of the day, I'm just hoping Mr. Corgan has gotten over his woe-is-me we aren't the biggest band in the world phase and can bring a great album our way.

No, but I think Rhapsidity will.

He's a compicated machine, that Corgan, not unlike some bizarre vending machine, albeit one that occasionally plops out some of the finest ear candy ever heard.

Until James and either Darcy or Auf Der Maur sign up, I don't care.

Otherwise, I can't imagine it being any different from TheFutureEmbrace and we know how that turned out.
