My cd collection storage problems have been solved.

Image

I got a couple of these at IKEA this weekend. They are only $15 each and hold 140 cds. I like these because they make it easy to add a new one. I'm going to start collecting a couple each time I go. 3 more would drastically improve my organization. 7 more would give me plenty of future space. I need to go back or get someone to buy some for me.

What exactly is "tiny url"? I see it a lot. Is that like photobucket for news stories?

And those are some sweet shelves. Nice and simple, the way it should be.

Those look pretty cool. And I might be needing something like that soon as I'm running out of storage right now.

where is posts 1-24 at?

Tiny Url takes a long link and converts it into a short link, for sending to people via message boards and emails. Long links, like those generated by Amazon, and such, can have 30, 60, or 90 characters and when the text wraps to fit on the screen it often becomes a broken link, or causes people to need to scroll to the right to see the end.

i don't have pix enabled & shouldn't check the tinyurl from work, but the best cheap cd storage solution i've found yet are milk crates. You can find them discarded often at stores. (they usually re-use, but sometimes not.) If not, check target or walmart where you can usually find them under $10.

Each crate is lightweight-yet-sturdy and can hold about 120 cds at two tiers of two rows (plus you can put extra stuff on the sides like special edition weird-shaped packages or rekkids).

I like them because they are cheap, easy to assemble, look good when lined up, and expandable. (Instead of buying a mismatched bunch of racks, unless Ikea stops carrying these.) They are also built for DVD's so you can mix and match what you put on the shelves if you keep your music DVD's with your cd's.

By milk carton, you mean crate, right?

I'd like to point out that using those sounds like something you'd see in a dorm. The problem with crates is that you can't stack them very well and be able to access/ see them properly with discs stacked on top of discs.

yeah. i meant crate. [edited]

and yes, this is simply for storage with minimal access. this is more for the person who's going to rip 'em all to mp3 and leave 'em alone after.

Damn, they are cheap. I wonder if the ikeas here have them.

I use the Bennos which are more expensive, but work better in my room cos they're skinny so I can squeeze them in wherever there is space.

ikea has carried those for over 5 years, it's a college dorm staple. They don't move well though, mine got a little wrecked in the last apartment move i made in chicago, but they do hold cds dvds, and books just fine.

Phil, did you try to move them with the cd's still in them?

I thought the catalog said the CD shelf was new, but I guess not. I only remember seeing the tall bookcases.

i like those too. i don't have a huge CD collection, so 4 of them work fine for me. and since the shelves aren't very wide, you can split them up by letter if you file alphabetically. it's quite convenient.

Hey, Timmy, what's the height between the shelves? I'm wondering if you could squeeze in two rows of CDs on each shelf.

Yeah, I'll definitely need to use something else in five years time when my collection is much bigger, but for the moment and with my present living arrangements, they're the best option

Nope, I bought the exact same thing, even had the same name for $18 in 01. It lasted me till this year though. I never moved it with cd's in them.

The back is only held on with tiny finishing nails. I would recommend using a light amount of glue and construction staples. Also, when you construct it, one shelf is screwed in instead of setting in, for stability. I would recommend stapling into that shelf as well.

With the cd shelf, no. ($14.99) The shelf height is a little more than a DVD. The unit is only like 44" tall.
With the book shelf, probably. ($19.99) This one is 68" tall with deeper shelves.
I don't like stacking cds on top of each other because I always want the bottom one out.

With the cd shelf, you could probably add one more shelf per unit for cd's but that would be a lot of hassle.

The back is now that corrugated plastic, which may or may not help with durability, and no shelves are screwed in place. They are all dropped in and held by gravity/ friction.

A 250 gig media storage server. The idea is to store all your music on it, whether it gets there by cd or file transfer. It's hooked up to my router, so I can tinker with it via pc, and transfer mp3's over.

It uploads album art from online, and can display it on the tv if desired (or pc). It gets online audio streams like KEXP and such too, and lets you treat them like regular radio throughout the house. It stores pics too, (for the tv I guess) but I don't use it for that.

Then it has 3 separate outputs for the stored music files, so I can have 3 of the 6 zones in the house pulling from our catalog at the same time, if for some reason I wanted to.
