I remeber Radcliffe saying something last year when people were bagging on the then-new Spoon and New Pornagraphers records to the effect of: "Its not Girls Can Tell, it doesnt have "Letter From An Occupant" on it; its a new album, fucking get over the album that made you fall in love with the band and accept it."

Except in this case, it's not "Is This It" OR "Room On Fire," and it's missing all of the hooks and rockness that made those albums at all remarkable.

I was perfectly ready to love a new Strokes album, just not a mediocre one.

So, its your contention that the new rekkid has less rock or hooks than Room on Fire? I think not, and Room on Fire is, I think, my fave album this decade. They lost nothing. First Impressions brings TEH ROCK.

i think "first impressions" lacked focus.

but different strokes, different folks.

Strokes album is fucking qual. It's earned its spot in heavy rotation for a good 8 months straight. I like the new more guitar-focused sound, I like the tight production. I find myself in the mood to hear this when it's midnight and I still have 3 hours of homework. Headphones, volume up to 11.

Impressions is one of those records that makes me say, "Hey, this is really good. Why don't I listen to it more often?"

But for some reason I don't listen to it that often.

For one thing, it's at least fifteen minutes too long.

Impressions is awesome. I never got tired of it. Currently number 2 for me.

As for the Shins, I liked the first two albums but I'm not tripping over myself to hear the new one. I'm honestly surprised how stoked people are for the new Shins.

When did this thread turn into the terrain of the New Dumb? If The Strokes rekkid sucked, name 3 better than it this year.

And Tanner, I love you, but clean out your ears...the only clunker was the single.

I don't think they're are any real clunkers but I think the quality drops after about 8 or it's less consistent from song to song. I'd like it more if it was paired down a little. I kind of like my Strokes shorter and sweeter.

But this is a top 10 album of the year for me. Shit, I can find a little critizism for almost any album. And Katie, if you don't like You Only Live ONce and Heart in a Cage, then you're unfortuantely have lost your mind. Those songs are outstandingly good. The only thing that truly sucks about the Stokes is their cover art.

heard "phantom limb" (thx 5l5k). it's good. the familiarity of his voice put a smile on my face. but it wasn't as catchy as their earlier stuff. i'll need more listens.

you make it too easy...

not saying it sucked...it would maybe creep into my top twenty. Which is saying a lot because i've only listened to about 10 new albums this year.
