I live in a part of the country where 30k is more than 3/4ths of the residents make. So this thread is a funny thread.

As is the notion that you can always make as much money as you want to make if you just put more work into it. That's true in some instances, very much not true in many others.

Let me offer my summary: I dont care about you or your job..and if you can justify it to yourself, good for you, you've done your job.

Meh...

Your posting reeks of jealousy of being smarter than people making more money than you.

And of course you care about other peoples jobs that why you made a big deal in the first place. But keep acting cool, cause it's not transparent.

So, you appear to have an across the board hatred of certain professions without regard to individual personalites?

That's damned silly, especially since the Cap'n is such a nice dude and all.

Pretty condescending for someone who's engaged in an INTERNET sqabble over other people lives and judging them without really knowing anythign about them.

As I said before, the "I don't care" argument is the worst logical fallacy there is. Why have you waded your fucked up, broke ass in to this thread if you plain don't care?

Fuck a buster, don't trust a buster, everybody buck a buster, don't you wanna be buster free?

Some people don't have more money that they need, Mr. Educator Man. Some don't have the luxury of deciding not to "be a lemming."

The sheer disconnect with everyday life on this board baffles me nearly every day.

some kind of research paired with teaching undergrads. Paul's bright, and i can see where he's coming from.

Kyle definitely doesn't fit those stereotypes though.

Now it's time to break bread and drink. booze that is.

O.k. what do i like to do and what am i good at? I'm creative. I like working with creative people. I hate dealing with dumbasses. When i talk with people, I like getting to know their point of view, especially if it's one i don't share but that they've thought out well. Mostly because I think that my point of view is well thought out and that I can sway them to my side through evidence. Failing that, it's insults and pig headed stubbornness. Um...

Crap.

what about doing something like higher education administration or college advising? i've been looking into programs for this, and i think i would really love. going to start applying for next fall, i believe.

I would certainly argue that your idea of "more money than they need" differs tremendously from mine.. I have enough to pay the bills.. and that is really all the money I need.

ok I need to actually tear myself away from this engaging discussion... thanks for all the fish

Stepping outside the bounds of this little discussion, if you truly think I'm a bad person, or materialistic, or a peon, or some such, I'm a little depressed. I'll grant you that we DO put too much stock in buying shit and working to be able to do so as a society... I'd welcome a discussion of it.

I'm just not willing to do it while you insult me. Does that sound so odd? You've insulted me directly 2 or 3 times at least. It's never too late to apologize.

You seemed pretty good at breaking down other but then get touchy and condescending when people do it to you. So you only want people to make more money than they need in things that you consider worthwhile to society. AWESOME. PAUL FOR PRESIDENT. And you specifically called Kyle a lemming if I'm not mistaken or at least implied.

I doubt he really cares to know the first thing about you. Besides, I think his argument was more against the idea of needing an MBA or Phd to make a living wage and not whether you personally have a wage you can live on.

and more on topic to Phil,

I agree entirely with Paul when he says that all you do is complain about teaching. Either stop complaining or do something about it. I think I'm done reading these threads. They are tiresome.

Cap'n he so cool, he's not even having the argument or insulting you, because HE DOESN'T CARE. You on the other do, and that makes you a lemming. A lemming with a scooter. So, stop arguing on the internet, drop out of those "self-betterment classes" and live off the land. Like real men.

Okay, I see what you mean, Billy. Too bad Paul's so bad at making his points, though. If it's more important to be contemptous than it is to communicate, a person's not gonna communicate.

Ok Capn.. I will be serious for a minute assuming that your last post was sincere. If you read my first comment, it had nothing to do with you at all..or anyone in particular. As I said I dont know you. You felt it necessary to respond cordially inviting me to kiss your fucking ass. So stop with this fucking bullshit about feeling depressed or inviting a serious conversation. You made it personal where I hadnt.. you invited the rest.

... well that's true. I also screwed up assuming you weren't serious, thus my ill-toned answer. That's why, a few posts later, I expressed concern that you might in fact actually think that I, and all other mba's/jd's, are irrevocably and unarguably lemmings. Imagine my surprise.

I don't believe in absolutes, too often.

You still think I'm a lemming? (and it's a 500cc parallel twin Kawasaki Vulcan, classified as a motorcycle, not a scooter, though there is one scooter model I know of with a 600cc engine, but it's rare)

I have the full collection of graduate degrees, and I administer large numbers of educators (whose delightful independence and innate distrust of authority makes it, quite literally, like being responsible, accountable, for herding cats). I am compensated fairly well.

Teachers are not. Classroom teachers of children and teens should be the best and brightest. Attracting quality teachers, KEEPING quality teachers is crucial... the American public schools built the world's greatest workforce from the 40's - 70's. Our systems of higher education attracted talent from around the world. Both of those facts are hardly true in 2006.

Investment is rewarded, not labor. Privilege is isomorphic... hence the lemmingness that it needs to protect itself and will at all costs. But the American idea of social mobility (as determined by work hard, get an education, be rich and own stuff) is no longer really factual. Just last year there was a comnprehensive study that upward mobility in class-bound England was much more possible than here.

As far as the bitter bickering about teachers and lemmings.... a working class hero is something to be, but yer all fucking peasants as far as I can see.
