I do, and I hate it. I wanna quit, but nothing works.

So what I'd like to know is, how long have you smoked for, what do you smoke, and do you plan on quitting. If so, any advice??

Thanks.

Why are you asking people who still smoke how to quit?

My advice: date a girl who hates smoking.

This worked for me in high school and probably saved me from years of smoking. First girl I seriously dated in high school (4 months......it was love) hated cigarettes. I was a sophmore and all my friends were just starting to smoke. I never really picked it up.

I did start smoking some in college when I was out drinking but I can't remember why I quit.

I think I just started exercising more. Exercising regularly at least makes you think twice before lighting up.

Bottom line is, if you really want to quit there is no easy way IMO. Exercise and being disciplined. I don't have any advice other than that.

I know that after 2-3 weeks it gradually becomes easier or so some of my friends tell me.

ive relapsed here & there when i'm not paying attention to what i'm doing. like i'll be walking down the street and suddenly BAM! a cigarette just flies into my mouth and spontaneously ignites itself.
seriously, the longest stretch of not smoking i ever had started one morning when i woke up and just didnt have a cigarette for no particular reason. and the next day, and the next. next thing you know months have gone by.
so, really, i'm no fucking help, except that when i stop i usually dont *quit*, i just stop, and every so often remiind myself 'why would you want a cigarette? you dont even smoke'

It's hard because all the men in my family smoke, including my dad, cousins, and uncles, not to mention 80% of my friends too. I'm all around it! It's hard to quit the habit when you've grown up around it.

I quit a little over 3 years ago. I mark the official date as mid-August, but I started cutting back in probably April or May. Little things like waiting a little longer after a meal, or taking a little more time between breaks, or not smoking on stupid little errands in the car. I never smoked in my house, but I worked on not going outside to smoke after I got home from work.

Then it would be stretching the pack to make it last a little longer. Or go a day without it. Just one day. Then the next week maybe I'd try a day and a half or two days. It was a long weaning process, but it started to not be as big a deal. One day in August I looked up and hadn't smoked in several weeks.

I also had a box of those Velamints (like your grandmother would carry in her purse, not all that good) that somehow ended up in the house. I would stuff my pockets with them and pop one to eke out another 15-20 minutes between breaks. I wouldn't recommend straight up candy, but these things were harmless. I've only smoked on two occasions since then, both before xmas from when I quit. I get a craving every now and again, but I know what it took to stop, so there's no way I would indulge, even when drunk.

It just takes time, but god is it worth it.

I smoke on the weekends only, typically when I'm drinking. It was a tough habit to break off that daily morning smoke, after meal smoke etc. What Fu said, try a weaning process. I usually go a full week between cigarettes now, and I don't even think about it. It's a matter of conditioning. As to why I can go a full week between smokes and haven't quit yet? I love to smoke and don't want to quit.

I've been smoking for ten plus years. Apparently there's this new drug on the market now Called Chantrix or Chantix one of the two. But it's supposed to work wonders for people trying to quit. I've been thinking about quitting for some time now and when I do I plan on going straight to these drugs. I hear it's pretty expensive but no more then what I pay a month for smoking. I believe the drug is made by Pfizer.

sure. I've never actually tried to quit but I dont think it will be a problem. I think what Fu said is probably the best way and before I quit drinking I had pretty much done the same thing. Since I quit drinking I've actually been smoking more, but I can see that starting to decrease as well.

I'd be open to trying Nicorette just to help but I wouldnt wanna get hooked on it as a replacement.

I quit every night. If I could find someone to hold them, I'd probably smoke em in my sleep. It's a vile, nasty habit.

I can and often do go without smoking for weeks. But i'll rip through twenty of 'em on a night like it's my business if I'm in the right company/drunken state of mind.

I started smoking when I was 21, then quit for a few years. Then started and stopped a few times inbetween then. I'm 25 now, and I plan on quitting again soon. Job stress is usually what keeps me going back. I've never really smoked too heavily, maybe like a pack a week. And the times I quit before, I didn't consider it difficult.

Willpower and weaning seems to be the best tactic. I'd never invest in any of the Nicorette/patch stuff, so I can't comment on how well those work.

, or taking a little more time between breaks, or not smoking on stupid little errands in the car.

that has been and probably is the hardest part for me quitting officially and finally.

Most of my smoking has been and is done while driving. I have, at times, set a certain amount of mileage to limit my smoking in the car.

Back in the day, I'd drive a couple miles to the grocery store and have one on the way there and on the way back.

I swear it is a manifestation of boredom for me sometimes almost as much as the "stress" excuse. It's tough to do, but I am on my way. It does just take time. Word.

I started smoking when I was a teenager, but at that point it was a very rare thing - who know how long it would have taken me to get through a pack of cigarettes. In college, I actually got an addiction, which was broken, for the most part, while I was married (the ex-wife is an avid non-smoker) . . . I would usually only have a cigarette while drunk. Since the divorce, I have gone back to being just as much of a smoker as I always was, probably a solid pack a day habit. I know the health consequences, but I really enjoy the drug - I hope to cut back to Dumpjack's level, or quit altogether, but I know that I will probably have to quit drinking for a while if I hope to quit smoking. Service industry is a smoky industry.

Smoked for 6 years, from the summer of 1994 till september of 2000. Quit cold turkey on October 1st of that year, and never had a relapse. Smoked half a pack a day in 1994, a pack a day from 1995-1997, 2 packs a day from 1997-1998, and then about a pack a day until I quit.

There is no trick to it. Either you're willing to quit or you're not. Some people are never really willing. It was not very hard to do for me, but many have different experiences.

I figured out last year that I had saved over $15,000 in money I would've spent on cigs since I quit.

I don't think I've ever actually craved a cigarette.

I quit tobacco 11 months ago, just by stopping. Easy-peezy.

I still indulge in cannabis. Often.
