Took the first step to becoming an official homeowner. It becomes official on Wednesday when the next step is taken -- procedures to get my name on the deed.

So, this is what it's like to be a grown up.

*gulp*

This is scary stuff.

I cannot wait until I can afford to own my own home.

Congrats. That's very exciting.

It is scary.
But very, very cool.

Congrats, T!

Congratulations, Tania! It's so great to have a place you can call your own.

Are you buying a new one, or is this your Mom's house?

I like owning property. It makes the debt hurt less.

It's my mom's house which I've been living in for several years. The house was paid in full years ago, but she took out a reverse mortgage a year before she passed away and owed a hefty amount. Luckily for me, the amount was low enough to afford to take over ownership. It's a fixer upper with lotsa potential.

I also own almost eight acres in a rural part of Texas -- somewhere that I doubt I will EVER live. But, I just learned developers are starting to build in the area. I'll be patient and sell that when the time is right.

Great news, T! Homeownership has always been my milestone to reach in order to be declared an adult. That and putting up curtains instead of sheets, tinfoil and garbage bags over the windows.

I don't know if I could live in the house that I grew up in. It would take some major renovations and projects to get it the way I would like it. I love owning my own house, but I hate paying the mortgage and taxes. :P

Owned since August but haven't moved in. I'm sure I'll be much more excited then. EDIT: All the best, Tania.

Trust me, it's definitely gonna take some work. I've already got plans to paint the outside, rip out the carpeting, new flooring, new bathroom, new kitchen, additional bathroom, paint the inside, etc.

I think I'm gonna ask Santa for my own power tools this year.

Congrats T.

I was riding around Nashville this weekend looking for places to rent and saw literally many hundreds of "For Sale" signs all over town and thought to myself, well... the real estate bubble has burst here.

Congrats, T! We should be closing in mid-November on the house we're having built. It's exciting and terrifying all at the same time!!!

You should do a "before and after" photo log. I started one for my house but I haven't gotten further than ripping up carpet and painting here and there. All my money has been sunk into mechanical things (HVAC, changing out well water to city water). Anyway, have fun and congrats!

Totally.

That's so cool T.! I'm so happy for you. What a relief: no more rent-paying to some person, you'll actually be paying toward something.

What's the town?

La Grulla, Texas

Quote:
LA GRULLA, TEXAS. La Grulla is three miles south of Alto Bonito and U.S. Highway 83 in the southeastern corner of Starr County. It was founded in the 1780s by Spanish pioneers, probably descendants of followers of José de Escandón.qv Matias Longoria was the first settler. The Spanish-speaking community extended on both sides of the Rio Grande before 1848. The town takes its name from the Spanish word for crane, the sandhill crane having once been common on the ponds a mile north of town; the ponds had been drained for farming by 1988. The post office, established by 1912, is named Grulla, but the community is called La Grulla. The community had ten businesses and a population of 250 in 1940. The town incorporated about 1966. In the early 1990s there were many vegetable farms around the community, which at that time also comprised six businesses, as well as the Holy Family Catholic Church, a Mennonite church called Iglesia Hermanos Mennonitos de Grulla, a junior high school, and an elementary school. The Oblate Trail between Brownsville and Laredo passed through La Grulla, and the old brick church is so marked with an 1849-1949 medallion. In 1991 the community reported seven businesses and a population of 1,390; in 2000 there were sixteen businesses and 1,211 inhabitants.

See that? 1211 inhabitants...Party Town, USA!!

Congratulations! I've quite enjoyed owning a home. I bought mine in May and with plans to do a lot of work on it, I decided I was only motivated to do very little. A word of warning, every improvement takes at least twice as long as you think it will. At least it has for me who is terrible at that sort of thing.

Damn, does the property back up to the Mexico border? I'm sure McAllen will keep growing and La Grulla will be an official suburb in about 15 years.
