...is what I will say if they blow this game in which they had a 21-0 lead over Texas a short while ago, and is suddenly 24-14. Respectable teams do NOT lose to opponents with QBs named Colt McCoy.

I think this depends on whether you are refering to Texas Tech as a organisation (is a bunch of cunts) or you are refering to the current individuals within that organisation (are a bunch of cunts).

I also think that by using "is" you are confirming a long held, probably subjective opinion, while with "are" it seems to be an opinion that has direct corelation to a specific event and therefore seems to have more justification.

the conflict is between the "is" and "bunch". Since he uses "is" as referring to the team as one unit,the one unit can not be a "bunch" of things.

Yea, but he wasn't saying the Red Raiders are a bunch of cunts. In your analogy it would be New York is a bunch of cunts, but the New York Yankees are a bunch of cunts. In the first part, New York is one thing, but in the second part New York is an adjective describing the Yankees which is plural.
