I'm looking for some truly scary ass movies to watch tonight with some folks and I need some recommendations.

The reason I made it the last 20 years is because I've watched a lot of the "classic" horror films of the 60's and 70's and they just don't do it. It may be the technology or something. I watched some of the Exorcist yesterday and I actually laughed at some of it now.

I recently watched the remake of The Hills Have Eyes. Now, I have seen the original on from time to time and it was boring and not very scary IMO. But after seeing the remake I was genuinely disturbed, especially by the "trailer" scene with the 2 moms.

I know there are some fans of the genre on here. Whattya got?

I've heard the guy who did Ichii the Killer has some pretty scary shit. Audition? Imprint? I haven't seen em.

Devil's Backbone?
Cabin Fever?
Stir of Echoes?
Jacob's Ladder?

I honestly don't watch many but I'm in the mood tonight. I know Shiv would have some recommendations but he's at work.

Audition was good, but for much of the movie you're waiting for the payoff. It's more of a suspense film than anything.

Jacob's Ladder is one of my favorite films of all time. Such a mind-fuck in so many ways.

The original Hellraiser makes my list too, although that may be just before the 20 year cut off.

The Ring and The Blair Witch Project were both scary enough for me, too.

I also really liked The Descent, although it's probably a notch below the very best. Did you see that?

I think that might be a little older than 20, but Army of Darkness is certainly in that window :D

I wanted to but didn't get a chance. I asked the video clerk and he said it won't be out on DVD until December or something.

Weird, man. I was playing that UNKLE album yesterday (and today as well), and forgot they used dialogue from that movie in the song 'Rabbit in Your Headlights'. I hadn't thought of that movie in so long until I heard Danny Aiello's voice say something about angels and demons and then it all came back to me. Creepy shit.

I downloaded the dvd of The Descent on the weekend and am gonna watch it in a couple of days. I heard it's pretty fucking scary.

If you're looking for movies just to gross you the fuck out, I suggest:

the Cannibal Series, especially Cannibal Holocaust.

120 Days of Sodom

I think Jacob's Ladder is definitely scary. It's got some really freaky parts but it ends up being way more psychological and is nto really comparable to slasher horror movies. So, it depends on what type of horror you're looking for.

The descent was good in a surving some crazy stuff sort of way.

Stir of Echoes, IMO, was leaps and bounds better than the sixth sense and they came out about the same time.

WHATEVER YOU DO--DO NOT SEE PULSE. it was a horrible movie.

I am curious to see teh movie coming out called "The Messenger" or maybe it's The Messengers. Either way, the preview looked as though it could be quality.

28 Days Later was scary for about the first 35-40 minutes.

Poltergeist - the first one - i remember as being scary but I have not seen that in a long time.

Hellraiser is clearly on the list, since I am not yet 30 and I believe it came out after I was ten.
28 Days Later is great
Excorcist III and the prequel were pretty good

I refuse to see the Hills have Eyes remake, the first one might not have been really scary, but it was a solid film. I hate it when they remake a movie and change up the plot line so they can add more gore.
I heard Wes Craven is remaking Last House on the Left, too. What a bitch, I hope he rots in hell.

Edit: Two words make the original Hills Have Eyes better, Michael Berryman.

I agree but seeing as I didn't see the original when it was new all I can think of when I see him is Weird Science as the mutant biker guy.

That guy made an entire career out of looking freaky.

A Tale of Two Sisters
Saw (scared the shit out of me)
28 Days Later
Peeping Tom (more suspense than horror)
Seven (again, more suspense than horror)

Saw was pretty creepy, I'll agree. I just saw House of 1000 Corpses this weekend, and it wasn't too scary for me... more kitschy and funny than anything. I'd say that's true of the Evil Dead movies too.

Has anyone seen Hostel? Is it really that scary?

Hostel's more gross than anything. I wasn't scared, just bothered by the plot.

1000 Corpses wasn't really *scary*, I guess, but that lack of a happy ending really creeped me out.

Audition is kind of boring for the first hour or so and then it gets majorly fucked up.

Hard Candy wasn't really scary but it made me feel like I needed to take a few showers.

I'd recommend Session 9, The Howling, Dog Soldiers or R-Point. I seem to remember The Eye being pretty creepy too.
