Does this apply to statewide races to or usually Senatorial elections? Besides this incidence the only other one I really remember was the Jesse Helms one about a decade ago against his african american opponent. At the time of the Helms ad, I believe the election polls were pretty close too.

They do it because it works.

It's easier to paint the opponent as a godless heathen who fornicates than to try and win on issues.

They can't win on the issues because the Repubs have fucked it up so badly at home and abroad that they have to use the old "look over here, look over here" strategy.

Yeah, I was just wondering if someone would do this sort of thing to Loog's Attorney General candidate if he was like Ford in Tennessee.
