Yeah, they're only half there and it's been just under 25 years since their last studio album, but color me intrigued, nonetheless. I'd welcome seeing this on the distro, TD.

It'll essentially be another Townshend solo disc.
Daltry on vocals, that's about it.
IMO, once Moon died, so did The Who.
And now that Entwhistle is gone too, so is any last speck of viability.

Yes I do.
Hence my attitude.

I'm listening to the first song now. They've had no new ideas since Eminence Front, I guess?

It absolutely does not suck. I like the first half a lot, but the "Wire & Glass" portion doesn't work so well. I had hoped they'd fill that out more from the EP, and they did, but not like I had hoped. As Todd said, it's a Townshend solo album with Daltrey guesting. Go into it with that attitude and you might actually enjoy it.

I don't care what name they go by - I just like the music. The two are still capable of putting out some decent stuff. There's some short, inconsequential stuff, but the real songs are quite good - Fragments, Purple Dress, Mike Post, Black Widow's Eyes, Marty Robbins, It's Not Enough, Endless Wire, We Got A Hit, Mirror Door, and Tea & Theatre. The rest are, I guess, connective tissue for the story line and aren't awful, but aren't memorable, either. Awful, however, is In The Ether - Pete trying to be Tom Waits, and it's painful in spots.

Pete's voice in general is really showing its age - he's got that thick, nasal old-man voice, unfortunately, and it seems that once that's set in there's no coming back. Roger sounds good for the most part, but he too is starting to sound a bit aged. Most spots where Pete sings I wish Roger was singing, however.

If you buy this thing, be sure and do so at Best Buy - not only do you get the 5-song live DVD that comes with it, you also get an additional 7-song live CD that only overlaps the DVD by two songs (Mike Post and WGFA, I believe.) The band sounds a little shakier than they did when I saw them in 2002 (and the official boots I have from that tour prove it) but for $9.99, I'm not complaining.

It's a good album with some very good songs - "Man In A Purple Dress" has been in my head all day for good reasons. Unfortunately, most people are going to spend more time coming up with what they think are witty jokes at the band's expense rather than actually giving the music a chance.

Tom's not too far off with his assessment, believe it or not. I wouldn't quite go so far as to say the album on the whole is good, but it does have plenty of good songs.

"It's Not Enough" is their best song since "Who Are You," and songs like "Black Widow's Eyes," "Sound Round," "We Got a Hit" and "Mirror Door" are all very good. Even a couple of others (the title track, "Pick Up the Peace" and "Mike Post Theme") have their moments. While Daltrey's voice shows its age at times, Townshend's guitar certainly does not, and they still hit those magic harmonies.

I think people are claiming this album is terrible because it gets off to a bit of a weak start and there's also that whole stigma of continuing to trot out "The Who" as the band name. Think of it as a Pete solo album with Roger guesting, and that might help.

As for me, I enjoyed this more than this year's albums from such Who contemporaries as Neil Young, Paul Simon, David Gilmour and Bruce Springsteen. Nowhere near Top 20 worthy, but definitely worth hearing and keeping.

I'd still rather spend my time coming up with what I think are witty jokes than spend it listening to this album.

This was taken from Gapers Block today...

The question:
Quote:
What would be the lead track on the soundtrack for the John Hughes movie about your high school experience?

This dingdong's answer:
Quote:
"Wasteland"
-Augustana
or
"Teenage Wasteland
-The Who

If you like the song enough to list it as a possible lead track on your high school soundtrack, why don't you know the correct name of the song? Why?
