Sorry, but my entire knowledge of South Africa revolves around Lethal Weapon 2, Kruegerrands, and Bloor's obsession with their nuclear program.
Yeah, I got a lot of problems.
Didn't the SA offensive nuclear programme exist as a collaboration with the (unofficially) nuclear Israel, with the Afrikaaners only pulling out in the last of the 80s upon realizing that, inevitably, there would be a black gov't in their country that they (the whites) would not want in possession of the bomb?
Imagine how cool the Demo. Rep. of the Congo & Zimbabwe would be, though, if Mbeki had nukes to sell to the rebels & Mugabe....
Yeah, the Israeli's were in on it even though they already had functioning nukes by the time the South African's got serious about it in the late 70's. The two did collaborate on some technology though and allegedly did that "test" out in the Indian Ocean together. The South African's were in a great position though because they were sitting on tons of fissile material and didnt have to go out looking for it.
I think their (probably legitimate) fear was that some Soviet backed neighbor would invade and the West wouldnt back them up.
