Having trouble thinking of anything I really hated mainly because I avoided listening to a lot of stuff that seemed really bad upon sampling bits. Le Tigre definitely falls into this category, and I can't say I listened to the album enough to really hate it.

One thing I did try to like but was very, very disappointed in was this:
Image
Richard Youngs - River Through Howling Sky

Recommended by someone as something fans of Jackie-O Motherfucker would like (still trying to find more than the faintest, most superficial similarity), it generally got good reviews and seemed like a good place to start with this artist. Anyway, I think it's minimal, druggy, hippy, self-indulgent, drum-circle-without-the-drums, wanky-art-guitar crap with dumb, cliched lyrics that reach for "trancendance" and universalism but fall pretty flat. I don't know if I'll give Youngs another chance, but a lot of people who like his older stuff didn't like that last one.

Oh yeah - that Joanna Newsome (sp?) rubbed me the wrong way as well...

Microphones, Live In Japan- Just dreadful. After one spin, I was so stunned by the enormity of the badness of this album, that I tried to listen to it again to make sure I hadn't been abducted and gang-raped by aliens during the first go-round. I didn't make it through spin #2. If I was Phil Evrum, this is the one that would make me spend the rest of my life fearing that my children and grandchildren might stumble across it and forever curse their stained ancestry.

Elvrum has definitely taken a nose dive. I'd heard that some people really hated his live show, but I'd always thought I'd be among the ones who appreciated it. When I finally saw him last year, that just wasn't the case. He was awful, new heights of precious and pretentious. I haven't heard the Live in Japan thing, but I have listened to the 3 LP thing taken from two consecutive shows in Denmark (or somewhere), and it had some decent moments. Mainly though, those were just older songs and bits of audience participation. I don't like any of the songs he's done since the Mt. Eerie album as far as I know.

I tried, I wanted to like it, I even liked monster, up, NA Hi-Fi, and even some songs off of reveal, but I couldn't listen to this.

I'd have to say this was mine as well. I did like 'Leaving New York' though, it was pretty wussy. What the hell does "leaving was never my proud" mean anyway?

Stipe said "it just felt right" even though it's grammatically silly.

I like the songs but dislike the bland veneer on most of them

I don't think I actually purchased any albums I disliked greatly so I will just say Interpol.

The absolute most grating record i heard all year was this record by a band called the Gym Class Heroes on Fueled By Ramen.

Emo kids rapping to like drums and guitar. It gets worse. They have a song where they namecheck two dozen emo bands in the lyrics, "I'm like, Hey Mercedes, wanna make a Dashboard Confessional At The Drive-In?!"

I want to kill them fucking dead.

[2003's worst CD was From Monument To Masses]

I was as pissed as anybody about the hype around their first album, but no matter how much I might have wanted to, I couldn't really hate Antics. It's pretty boring, but I still liked it as much or more than Franz Ferdinand, TV on the Radio, The Futureheads, Bloc Party, or !!!.

(I didn't really like any of that stuff very much, though.)

Pink Grease This Is For Real

This thing was so colossally shit-sodden that the fact I even bought it (used, grant you) makes me doubt my mental health. I had to trade it in within days lest it tainted the entirety of my reckid collection with its foul vapors.

Edit: some title action for Chase

Yup, she's pretty wretched. That helium tweet makes Victoria Williams sound like Ian Curtis.

From Monument To Masses was pretty good live but I had no interest in listening to them recorded. Though I imagine it's still not awful.

I think Whiney said something to the effect that it was "Lame math rock backed by snippets of GW Bush." He was right about the Bush snippets, but I thought the music was really interesting, especially with the introduction of electronic beats.

I like them, but this album sucked. Every song sounds the same. The only track I like is Between Us and Them.

Le Tigre
Geebuz. "Nuff said. They are fun live, the songs sounded better live, but BLEH.

Also, I really didn't like The Helio Sequence album from this year. It's just not any good. And I feel cheated after paying $5 for it.

O, and the only other one that could come close to competing with that shitbox Microphones disk was one I picked up by mistake- not a 2k4 release and thank god it was used and I'll probably get attacked here for hating it, but: The Walkmen, Evryone Who Used To Like Me Ran The Fuck Away In Horror, or whatever it was called. Couldn't get past the 3rd cut. Immediately after track 1, it was like mind control- I had an overwhelming urge to slash my wrists with broken cd's while jumping off the deep side of Hoover Dam with piano wire wrapped around my genitals. That was some dangerously depressing shit.
