You reminding me of Frente made me go try to look up what the radio hit from their second album was (it's "What's Come Over Me"), but I also learned that Marvin the Album originally came out in 1992 on a label called White, before being re-released in 1994 on Atlantic.

I know of the discrepancy. I think the Wikipedia page has the '92 release listed as AU and the '94 as US so I went with the latter. I generally go with the date that it would have been released in the store in my city as opposed to European, Australian, etc. release dates.

Me too. Live Through This is one of my favourites from the 90s. I don't give a shit who wrote her albums.

While I still hear "Violet", "Doll Parts", and "Miss World" fairly often, it's been a while since I've even though about "Asking For It" or "Softer, Softest". There was some good stuff here.

Since this thread's all about honesty, I'll admit that Celebrity Skin was the song/album that got me into alternative/indie/whatever music. Before that I kinda listened to top 40 radio, but wasn't really into it. The song got into the top 5 I think here - at any rate I definitely remember seeing it on Rage every Saturday morning for ages. From that I started listening to Triple J all the time and left crappy commercial radio behind.

I liked several songs off Celebrity Skin, and with all the hoopla around them touring with the Big Day Out got Live Through This. To say the least, it was a bit of a shock to my innocent ears, but I ended up loving it and becoming obsessed with music, and here I am today.

Haven't listened to LTT for ages. Might put it on now

I'm not liking this album as much as I remember. 'License To Confuse, 'Magnet's Coil', 'Skull', 'Rebound'... are all as good as I remember. But the whole thing doesn't seem as great straight through. Then again this isn't their best album, right? This is the only one I own but I think I've read better things about some of their other ones. Oh well, it was about $6 used.

The various stages of Harley vs. Jeff Buckley:

Stage 1: I only know 'Hallelujah'. I don't really like it.

Stage 2: I only know 'Hallelujah'. I love it.

Stage 3: I hear a few more songs but still only like 'Hallelujah'.

Stage 4: I have the whole album and love 'Hallelujah', 'Last Goodbye', 'So Real', and 'Lover, You Should've Come Over'. Don't really like the rest all too much.

Stage 5: Love the entire disc.

I'm currently between stage four and five. Those four songs slay me. They are enough to make me worship the spirit of Buckley and his voice especially. The rest of it I like and I can listen to but doesn't particularly grab me. I suspect it will someday. I'm sure, with time, I'll love the entire thing and appreciate it all. But currently, even though I'd like to, I don't.

One of the albums that helped shape my high school existence. I think I listened to this and Daydream Nation in high school more than any record.

Absolutely one of my favorite discs of all time. Even the songs that are "meh" are phenomenal, IMO. The shocking death and suddeness of it makes the disc stand out more because I always feel like I wonder how much more could have come from this dude. "Lover, You Should've Come Over" is probably in my top ten of favorite songs of all my sonic intake.

I thought I remembered this album being nearly as good as Copper Blue. I was wrong. 'Believe What You're Saying' is the only halfway decent song on here and it's not very interesting at all. I'll keep this, as a completist, but otherwise I would definitely sell it.

104. Smashing Pumpkins - Pisces Iscariot (1994)

Image

Previously in this thread:
I discovered that I don't particularly like Gish or Siamese Dream anymore.

Currently:
I don't like Pisces Iscariot anymore either. Seriously. I don't know when it happened or why but I just don't care about the Pumpkins at all. These songs do nothing for me. Every one just seems to drag on and I don't care. I don't care about you! I can't stand Corgan's voice at all. The music is dull. Everything just makes me want to turn it off but I don't because of this experiment.

'Landslide' is the only track on here that I kind of enjoyed and it's a cover. Okay, I'm hitting off now. 'Girl Named Sandoz' is making my skin crawl.

"Girl Called Sandoz" is also a cover.

I think the album suffers by letting the bass player have some on track 2 with "Company Book." OK song, but not up to Mould standards at the time. Stalls the record right off the bat. If you get rid of this, you might be able to find a used copy in any record store in the entire world.

105. Bikini Kill - Pussy Whipped (1994)

Image

I like to turn this record up loud, bounce around in my chair, sing along to it, and rock out. Is that wrong? No. Does it make me a lesbian? Possibly.

A dozen tracks of riot grrl rock clocking in at just under twenty-five minutes tells you all you need to know. Kathleen Hanna screeches and yells and tracks like 'Sugar', where the entire song's lyrics are a girl faking an orgasm, are awesome.

I can't think of any male bands in my collection that come close to rocking this hard.

106. The Lowest Of The Low - Gamble (1994)

Image

Two-song cd-single featuring the lead single off of Hallucigenia, backed with album track 'Night Of The Living Assholes'.

'Gamble' is still a pretty great Low song, though some of the lyrics in the middle of the song have always seem a bit awkward to me.

'Assholes' has never been a favorite of mine. One of my least liked tracks off Hallucigenia. It's not a terrible song, just not all that interesting.

107. Elastica - Elastica (1995)

Image

I think I first heard about Elastica due to 'Stutter' being on a movie soundtrack. Possibly Mallrats? I liked it. I was huge into alternative/alternative rock/post-grunge at the time so I was actively seeking out any band that fit under that umbrella.

This album's pretty good. I never really have a desire to listen to it but I like it well enough when I do.

108. Matthew Sweet - 100% Fun (1995)

Image

Matt Sweet writes some great songs. Unfortunately, he likes to spread them out over many discs. I own a couple of his albums but, the more I listen to them, the more I think that he's really a Greatest Hits artist. Because his proper albums aren't very good. They're okay. They're not bad. They're just bland. Aside from one or two songs. In this case, 'Sick Of Myself'. And... well, that's about it. The rest are just middle of the road pop/rock. Nothing special.

109. Headstones - Teeth & Tissue (1995)

Image

If this thread has done nothing else, it has achieved one purpose. My intense, unfathomable, obsessive love for Headstones has been reawakened.

As previously reported, Headstones were the first band I saw live at the tender age of eight or nine. The first band I entered a contest to win tickets for (and succeeded). The first band I made a website for. The first band I taped tv specials of and traded for demo tapes. Tied with The Lowest Of The Low for the band I've seen the most number of times live (five times in less than ten years).

So yeah, I used to love them. When they broke up around '03, they were still releasing solid material, in my opinion. But Hugh's demons were getting to be too much for the rest of the band. As was his growing acting career. When his new band, The Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir, released their debut two years later, I didn't even know about it until months later. And barely listened to it more than once.

But this. This album I fucking adore. I feel guilty for not having played it more in the past years. I feel like a parent neglecting their puppy. "I'm sorry baby, I still love you. Come here."

This is when the boys gained their footing and started becoming one of the best Canadian alt-rock acts around. 'Unsound', one of the main singles from the disc, is still an amazing song and one of my absolute favorites by them. 'Burning' is so pop and so distant from their early work yet still really great. 'Swinging' I even used in a class presentation on masochism in grade eleven.

And playing this reminds me why I love them. And reminds me that I need to listen to these records more. And reminds me of the concerts with Nashville Pussy and Robin Black. And the glee at finding my parents' best friends names listed in the liner notes. And winning their cd and tickets through The Toronto Sun. And my first time watching Hard Core Logo. And seeing Hugh on Degrassi. And their on-air fight with Ed The Sock that got them both banned from being on television together for years. And many more memories.

110. Juliana Hatfield - Only Everything (1995)

Image

I put this in my stereo, hit play, walked away, heard the few opening seconds, and forgot what I had just put in. That opening sounds nothing like a Juliana Hatfield song. It's one of her full-on rock songs that I'm not a real fan of. I much prefer tracks like 'Live On Tomorrow' or 'Bottles And Flowers'.

This is a pretty decent release from Juliana. If you're not a fan, you probably wouldn't like this disc that much but I am so I do.

111. Soul Asylum - Let Your Dim Light Shine (1995)

Image

I liked a couple of Soul Asylum songs so I bought their best of collection. I really enjoyed it so I started buying their proper albums. Then I thanked the fact that I got them used for about $4 each. Because they're not very good.

The only songs on here I particularly like are also available on the best of. 'Misery', 'String Of Pearls', 'Just Like Anyone'...

In fact, I tried selling this one a couple of times but the used cd stores wouldn't buy them back because they sat there for too long before I bought them. Oh well, it doesn't take up much space on the shelf even if I probably won't ever listen to this again.

I have this in the ltd. ed faux fur packaging. I really dig JH. This is one of her albums that actually got me into her.

112. Björk - Post (1995)

Image

Whenever I think of this album, I think "yeah, that's a pretty good disc." Then I put it on and think "this is fucking amazing." I don't know why I can't properly remember how good it is. But it's almost nice. Because I'm wowed to some extent every time.

And, honestly, every listen I have a new favorite track. Today's listen was 'Hyper-ballad'. It's been 'It's Oh So Quiet' in the past. That track really reminds me of something from Dancer In The Dark. 'Possibly Maybe' took the lead one day. 'Army Of Me', obviously.

The only two tracks I don't really love are the very last two. The rest of it is just so good that I want to share and play this disc for as many people as I can. Thankfully, anyone I know who would like this already does.

I don't really like this. I realise they're b-sides, but a lot of them are live. And their live songs just sound noisy and yelly. Not my thing.

Their cover of The Who's 'Armenia City In The Sky' is the same thing. Just loud and unpleasant.

The only ones I really like on this are the alternate mixes of 'If I Can't Change Your Mind' and 'Believe What You're Saying'. But those are two of their more poppy songs and I like pop music. So what a surprise that is.

114. Blind Melon - Soup (1995)

Image

This is a good album. Really. Many people don't believe that. Blind Melon are definitely one of the most criminally underrated bands around.

I wasn't digging it as much this time as I have in the past but I was also distracted. 'Galaxie', 'Skinned', 'Mouthful Of Cavities'... are all gold, though. Many of the tracks on here are.

Oddly, I still prefer Nico to this. That record's just a collection of assorted bits and pieces put together by the band after Shannon's death. So this is still preferred listening. But either are great.
