Knowing full well I have put one project on temporary hold (I promise I'll get back to it this week!!!! Really!!!!!), I've been kicking around this other idea for several months and wondered if people would be interested in doing something along these lines down the road:

You are going to be stranded on a tropical island for a highly paid research project for 10 years. There will be no cds, record stores or cd players anywhere on the island, but there is electricity and you are bringing a laptop. You are allowed to bring an IPOD which is strangely coded to fit exactly 500 cds of any length.

Is this something you could narrow down pretty easily? I know when we did listmania the albums were really hard to narrow down to 100, but could you live with just 500 albums for 10 years? In this day and age, I think it would be more difficult than ever. 10 years ago 500 albums seemed liked a freakishly large collection to me. Now it's seemingly small.

Of course, compilations come into play under these sort of circumstances more than anywhere else, because you can get the most of the best songs of an artist while sacrificing a few favorites for space.

I know listing 500 albums would be somewhat daunting (and hard to read in thread format), but it's just an idea that could be severely tinkered with.

I could easily live with 500 albums.

Well what if you don't have an Ipod but something else? Huh? Huh? Damn Mp3 player bias. :D

I think my head would explode if I tried to do this. I don't think I even own 500 cds.

I have more cds than I can really listen to...the idea of being limited to 500 isn't so tough. What's tough is the idea of not getting to hear anything new to me for ten whole years.

I could probably get by with about 5 albums if my life depended on it.

Dude, I can't make it a week with my 40gb Ipod filled up where I don't have to delete something off of it to make room for something else I "gotta have" on it. I think I'd fail at this experiment. I'm too much of a "complete collection" guy, that's my problem. I need to hear entire catalogs from too many bands that I love, rather than just albums or mere songs, which is where many of you will make out just fine.
