Man, Chris Elliott is one of my heroes, but this is an AWFUL book (and after almost three months, I'm only halfway through it)...

currently about half way through Joseph Heller's Closing Time, the sequel to Catch 22. If you've been missing Yossarian, it's a good read.

Just finished Best American Short Stories of 2006 and actually found a few good authors to check out further.

this is funny. last night i was rooting around for some short story fiction to read and pulled pout a copy of bass 1989. great stuff. any stand outs for you iron and wine?

right now i'm reading tons of short stories including the grandfather of short fiction, chekov. i also have to get to the bookstore to check out some muruakami.

I really liked Aleksander Hemon's "The Conductor" and am planning to read his novel soon. Kevin Moffett's "Tattooizm" was good, as was "Mr. Nobody at All" by Ann Beattie.

I came away realizing that Ann Patchett (Editor) and I have different taste in short stories, but there was definitely some good stuff in there.

Actually, the paperback's been out for awhile but it's been reissued with a newer, weirder cover:

It's one of those modern Russian classics that consistently regains popularity every few years. A great read. A warning though: it's full of flight of fancy and fantasticism. Some readers aren't into that but I tell people if you love and enjoy Haruki Murakami, you should read Bulgakov too.

Get out of my brain.

For the non-head-shaven cult members, the secondary title of "Collapse" is "How Societies Choose To Fail Or Succeed".
Probably matches Ripple Red's offering as the book to NOT pick up if you want to feel hopeful about life.

hey im reading this too

Yeah, I do 20 pgs every few days. Not as weighty or apocalyptic as you might assume, but serious enough to get the point across.

Agreed. I've been on a three week break after the first hundred pages.

This is a pretty fucked up read. I liked it, but it took a while to get into. On top of the language there's some syntax issues in there.

I didn't take time to read this thread but has anyone read The Perks of Being a Wildflower? Saw it the other day and I was intrigued.
