I'd imagine it'd help to see the evening in order to be shocked. Pretty hard to be shocked if you don't attend and whatnot. I suppose you could make up a wicked awesome good time in your head and walk around going "oh, scandalous!" to yourself. I'm no expert, but I think that's probably not the same.
