Also think that Let's Dance is such a great, fun album. If you hate this, there is clearly something wrong with you.

Never ever cared for Young or Dylan, at all.

SOMETHING WRONG WITH US?!!

I feel sorry for you if you can't dig on Neil Young or Bob Dylan.

No kidding, at least some of their music must be appealing.

And I always hated that Let's Dance album.

Too bad 1971 isn't in the 60's, because Tom Waits belongs on this list.

I'm no Dylan fan, but my understanding is he had at least two stellar albums in the '90s and/or '00s. Love and Theft and something else, I think. Would Bloor/LooGAR please clarify?

Love and Theft is a really really good (maybe great) record.

Time Out of Mind was more critically acclaimed (I think it one the Album of the Year Grammy as well for whatever that's worth), but I'm not really a huge fan of it. Its a little dark and Dylan is still finding his "new" voice.

Though his recorded has been pretty spotty in recent years, I think Dylan deserves a ton of credit for his constant touring and the fact that he completely reinvents his catalog on stage every night.

And yeah, he is off some nights but at his age and compounding that he actually takes chances (unlike the Stones for example), I think its pretty awesome.

Plus, its Bob Fucking Dylan.

that's a bunch of b.s, bob. to say that bands don't credit van as an influence is like saying that joni mitchell's never inspired anyone to give her credit.

like pollysix, i too say that lou reed should definately have been on your list as well as ray davies and michael jackson (to a degree...)

In retrospect, I feel pretty stupid for excluding Declan, because when it's all said and done, he very well may be the best of the bunch. Of course, there's also that matter of whether albums including The Attractions could count toward his "solo" output. I mean, except for a couple of Prince albums, even so-called solo albums feature a backing band.

Cohen should be in there

Johnny Cash too

David Bowie did have a crap period, it was during NOW. Music critics may cite it as his "current era" but it's been this way since Labyrinthe.

At least Mccartney's had a few really good albums in the past twenty years. How many has David had, add to that he wasn't so prolific in the sixties. I love his sevenites stuff, but please, I think it's time to get off his dick.

The ONLY Bowie album I actively dislike is Never Let Me Down.

So...um, there...or something.

(but I voted for Dylan)

Why did you resurrect this piece of shit thread?

Making it a poll with only three choices was a mistake, and those criteria are hard for anyone to live up to, even those three. There's defintely 30-40 years of suck between the three of them. Divvy it up however you'd like.

And don't get hung up on the backing band thing. How many great albums would ____________ (and) The Attractions have had without Elvis? They're good, but they're not The Band. Elvis was the only (or primary) writer, no? Unless he was doing someone else's song entirely...

Or you could go by a stricter definition of solo, 95% of the instruments on the album played by the "solo" artist. McCartney's last album is badass, then you consider that he's playing guitar, bass, drums, keys, vocals, etc... on it.

Shit.

Sorry, tired and cranky last night.

I like Bowie and Dylan, a little bit of Young (that voice though... I know, i like Dylan's voice. Whatever). But I don't think any of those three meet your criteria.

I'd say Caetano Veloso meets those requirements. And he rates right up there with your picks.
