Bloor brought this up about Pearl Jam the other day in chat about how their latter albums are alot better once you hear them live. Got me thinking. I think the same about post-Summerteeth Wilco. I think My Morning Jacket fits this bill too.

I'm not talking about great live bands here. But more bands that their records went from underwhelming to great after seeing them.

I saw Pearl Jam before 10 came out.
It had the opposite effect.
They were so amazing live, it completely ruined the record for me... sounded absoloutely pitiful by comparison.

I've never seen Pearl Jam live and I've been an active fan since 10 came out.

MMJ definitely fits the bill. I've seen them three or four times now and I still can't listen to their albums.

I think that a lot of experimental or jazz music only sounds good live, and I'm not even that big of a jazz fan. Like Liquid Soul... I've seen them live and enjoyed their shows, but recorded, it sounds very boring and juvenile. Same could be said for Poi Dog Pondering (boy, I'm just pulling out all of the 90's Chicago bands).

For a lot of folks, I think that Les Savy Fav fits this bill perfectly. It's tough to understand how great "Go Forth" is as a record until you catch the live show (where they still play most of it) and suddenly it all makes glorious sense.

i think you may be missing the point... seems this thread is about bands you have to see live to appreciate their recorded work. for instance, if you didn't like it still moves, saw MMJ, then went back and loved it still moves, it'd go in this thread.

Tough one for me. Usually, I will see bands live once I've heard and liked enough recorded work.

Jane's Addiction
Son Volt
311
Guttermouth
Barenaked Ladies

The new Hold Steady album. Didn't care for it much at first, then saw the band live, and since then I've heard the reckid quite differently.

Thanks for pointing that out. In front of the whole internet world.

Yeah, I was wrong.

I've converted a couple of people into KISS fans by taking them to their live shows.

I think they just pretended to like KISS cause they liked the anal sex.

wtf?

Trace went from "not too bad" onto the top-ten-all-time path when I saw them. Fits.
