Okay, I need people to go into the charts and add 2006 albums that they think people will vote for but aren't there already. Follow the normal chart rules. Don't screw up Haq's charts. And make sure what you add isn't already there.

Thanks. This will be very helpful when voting time comes. If it comes.

I went through a short while ago and added every 2006 release that I've heard. That's the best I can offer.

Is this going to be another year where we don't get the final results until February sometime?

Feist is spelled wrong and it's a 2004 release.

2 TV On The Radios.

2 Jason Colletts.

As a suggestion, please type in the artist name on the main Charts page before you even go to the Add new album page. That way, you can get a list of the albums under each artist rather than simply looking to see if the artist name is out there already.

Also, remember that a band is supposed to be listed with the word 'THE' as the first word (when appropriate). And when in doubt, check to see how an artist name or album title is spelled at places like Allmusic, CDuniverse, etc.

I just added a few albums

and the new Mogwai album is filed as "The Beast", instead of "Mr. Beast"

Actually, Let It Die has three different entries.

Maybe we should have a separate thread that lists duplicate entries to make it easier for Haq to delete them before the poll begins.

to make sure a misspelling isn't in there, you can do an artist search like %herbert% and that'll match all entries with "herbert" anywhere in the artist name.

The results have never been released in February sometime. The voting deadline is and has always been January 15 and I'm pretty sure I have always posted the results on January 16.

EDIT: Oh wait, sorry you're right. Now that we did the blurbs the last two years, it takes longer. Maybe I'll do a vote later for whether people want to results earlier or the blurbs. In either case, last year's results were posted January 31 and the year before's January 21. Previous year's were on CMJ, but there were no blurbs so they must've been January 16 or so. Never February!

May make sense, since I have no power over that.

I can't believe I never added code to check for duplicate albums. And that I'm not going to do so now either.

I think we need voting to end on December 31 or maybe even earlier. If you need two extra weeks to compile a list of 20 albums and you arent even a paid critic, you've got problems.

i'm pretty sure that some (a lot?) of us rely on holiday money/bounty to help in the decision-making process. in the last few years, i'm pretty sure at least one album i got in the last week of the year ended up being top-10 on my lists. i realize it's not exactly hip to wait it out for tangible products to listen to music from, but i think the extra time (maybe even just a week) does make a difference.

Precisely.

Most music mags will have their year-end lists published by mid-December. Which means they compile their lists well before that.

If you put the deadline for submission as the 31st, the results can be done by mid-January before everyone's sick of year-end lists and doesn't care anymore.

And that gives people who do get gift cards and whatever for Christmas about a week to buy stuff and give it a few spins. Besides which, if you think you'll probably like an album so much that it'll make your top 20, I'd have to imagine you'd have picked it up by the very last week of December. Any release I was really looking forward to this year, I picked up within three weeks of its release date.

you're ignoring the concept of liking music that you're not necessarily looking forward to hearing. i hadn't even heard of teddybears or girl talk before someone told me about them. i also had no idea that gustavo cerati or hem had new albums until months after their releases. all four of those have a good chance of being on any best-of list i'd compile for 2006.

But even if you left the deadline open until January 31st, there's still a chance you'd overlook them. I've discovered albums from 2004 this year that are fabulous. There's no way you can listen to everything released this year so you've got to figure there's bound to be something overlooked either way. Unless you plan on dedicating those two extra weeks to doing nothing but finding and listening to 2006 releases, you may as well just set the deadline at new years.
