$550 for Playstation 3
$300 for Xbox 360
$250 for Wii

I couldn't believe the price of the PS3 when I read it. I can't imagine any parent spending that much on a video game system for their kid. Especially once you add in the cost of additional controllers, memory cards, and the games itself.

That said, the Wii being as cheap as it is and, with the fact that you can play Gamecube games on it, I'm seriously considering it. I'm not big on video games at all. Right now, I own Gamecube and only own Super Mario Sunshine and a Mario Party. But it's cheap, I could make back half that cost by selling my Gamecube, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance looks pretty awesome.

Plus the new Zelda is a launch title for the Wii.

You could probably pick up a bunch of great GC games for it used.

I really shouldn't get another game system, but I'd like to have a Wii.

Sadly, there aren't all that many great GC games--that was the whole problem. But there's a handful of winners.

I want the Wii. I don't have time for PS games anyway.

I don't really enjoy the sports or shoot-'em-up games. Which is what Playstation seems to specialize in. I traded my PS2 in for a Gamecube at a pawn shop.

Gamecube does have Mario Kart, Zelda, Paper Mario, Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing... those are the kinds of games I'm into.

The only real advantage that PS3 has over Wii that I can see is Final Fantasy.

We're diffinately getting the Wii. The sports games alone look pretty dope and I can't wait to try out the new motion sensitive controllers. I'm also intrigued by the downloadable Nindendo back-catalog for the Wii. I love getting to play the NES and Super NES games I never had as a kid, and for 5 bucks a pop that's a deal.
I like my PS2 but I'm sure as shit not plunking down $600 for the PS3. If I get another grown-up console I'll pick up the Xbox 360.

And Metal Gear Solid & Grand Theft Auto 4.

I'm sure the PS3 price will drop next year sometime so I'll just wait it out. It's not something I need right away.

I like my PS2 so much that it's going to last me another 5 years probably.

Yea, I'm looking for something that I can play in bed easily and take on airplanes. It's super tiny, plays all the game boy games (i think) and has a rechargeable battery like the ipod.

Plus I can get the package deal at Sam's for like $110 which includes a case and a couple games.

For a bit more you can get a DS Lite, which will also play all Gameboy Advance games. Its touch-screen and wireless capabilities are worth the cost.

According to Wikipedia, it doesn't play Gameboy games, just GB Advance, although maybe that's what you meant.

the thing about the ps3 is that $500 is just the cover charge--in order for it to do what it's made to do you need an hdtv. what are those at these days? five large?

here are slate's thoughts

yeah, but gaming isn't really about kids and it hasn't been for a long time...the adults are the ones with all the disposable income and the prevalence of the games with adult themes reflects that

plus MS and Sony are pushing these systems as more than just gaming boxes...they're wanting these to be media centers that host photos, music, and videos, as well as playing hi-def DVDs...it remains to be seen if the public likes this idea and if the attitudes in this thread are any indication, it's may be an idea that's ahead of it's time

Stategy and Tycoon games--they don't translate well to a console.

Which ones? I'm might go and get the new Railroad Tycoon release.

Interested in joining one of those Everquest fantasy type online games, but i have no idea which one to go for.

I've been addicted to Railroad Tycoon since Sid Meir's first version back in '90 or so. Rise of Nations is a decent successor to Age of Empires.

If they ever get a decent Neverwinter Nights onto a console, look out. That game rocks.

Lately I've playing a bit of Tropico.

$5000? Seriously? You can get a low-end HDTV for a few hundred.

I got a 360 a few months back and love the shit out of it. I'm discovering the Tom Clancy games (Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon right now). I happen to have a HDTV with 1080i support, so shit looks real good.

Though if you are going to buy a 360, it'd be dumb not to buy the version with the hard drive, which is actually $399 (the hdd alone is $99 plus you get a wireless controller and a headset in the big bundle).

Reading that article, I see that the guy included all new satellite receivers and dvr, which from Time Warner you just pay a few dollars more per month to get a HD box with DVR. That $5000 figure is still way off, I think.

I like how there are no girls posting in this thread (well, except me, but I shouldn't count because I have nothing pertinent to add to this thread). That said, I have an old PlayStation my brother gave me when he got a PS2. I have two games for it. I never had a Nintendo. However, I did have and still own a Turbo Grafix 16 and the Turbo Duo. Yup. I'm behind the times on this stuff.

Agreed. I'd just go straight for the Lite.

Also, my household will be in possession of a Wii the day it comes out. I'm excited.
