A nice timely tirade which coincides with the release of his new album.


LONDON, England (AP) -- Organized religion fuels anti-gay discrimination and other forms of bias, pop star Elton John said in an interview published Saturday.

"I think religion has always tried to turn hatred toward gay people," John said in the Observer newspaper's Music Monthly Magazine. "Religion promotes the hatred and spite against gays."

"But there are so many people I know who are gay and love their religion," he said. "From my point of view, I would ban religion completely. Organized religion doesn't seem to work. It turns people into really hateful lemmings and it's not really compassionate."

John also criticized religious leaders for failing to do anything about conflicts around the world.

"Why aren't they having a conclave? Why aren't they coming together?"

John said those in his own field have been similarly lax.

"It's like the peace movement in the '60s. Musicians got through to people by getting out there and doing peace concerts, but we don't seem to do them any more," he said. "If John Lennon were alive today, he'd be leading it with a vengeance."

Even though Dwight is right that most fundamentalist christian doctrine foments agitation against gays, that's hardly the only religious belief in the world, or even the only Christian belief.

And Ol' Reg is pretty dense when it comes to rights. He'd take away the right to be religious to preserve the right to be gay.

Which is both fagcist and dumb.

true, but i think there's probably more religious people in the world who are anti- than pro-gay. i just heard something on npr the other day about how the muslims and jews came together in jerusalem to protest the gay pride parade. they even wrote a song about it that was getting played on local radio (which, despite lyrics about there being blood in the streets if the homos came a-marchin', sounded incredibly gay)

Guys, he was just mouthing off to a newspaper. It's not like he was thinking about it and then writing a philsophical treaty on it.

I don't think Elton has a philosophical treatise on anything.

What he has is Ghey PMS.

He gets in tight-britch snits and does the Bitch Queen bit to reporters several times a year.

Very little of what he says makes sense and later he only seems to vaguely recall hurtful or crass things he says about people, some of whom have been his friends for ages.

George Michael called him out for it a while back, which just made Elton even more petulant.
