I don't know what it is, but I took a ton of chances on albums song unheard and a lot of them haven't panned out. The YYY's were an autopurchase for me because I liked Fever to Tell so much, and I find this new one pretty mediocre. I was told Wolfmother was right up my alley, and that lasted maybe three listens before I wanted to throw the damn thing against the wall. I can't get into any of the Pollard gbv stuff. I also impulse bought the new Razorlight because their last one was one my faves of that year (2004?). I started to really get into early Frank Black this year, so I bought his new one on a whim and I can't put it on without falling to sleep. I got a few other recs from the board that I tried to sink my teeth into (Minus 5 for example), but I just can't quite get into them. Ugh. I've bought maybe 7 or 8 2006 albums this year I really like, and maybe another 15 or so I really really don't.

Anyone else having a year like this?

PS, I really like the Mission of Burma, TVOTR, Sonic Youth, Destroyer and Cheap Trick albums, and I've bought of ton of older albums I've really liked.

PPS, recs please.

I think there have been a lot of albums this year that have been disappointing, moreso than other years, and that's probably a big part of why I haven't been able to make a good top 10 list yet.

I love that FB album. In fact I think it might be the best thing he's ever done. I also think that this might be the best year for new music since 2002 so I'm pretty much having the opposite experience.

I can't think of much to recommend to you though if you think FB is a snoozer and probably don't really want world music recs. Most of what I've been digging from this year is a bit on the mellow side. Maybe try the Witch album (J Mascis and the guys from Feathers).

it's been somewhat of a disappointing year for me, as well. i can't recall anything that i was looking forward to that really panned out. most of my favorites have been albums by bands that i either didn't really like, very casually listened to, or didn't even know prior to 2006. i guess it's nice to have some surprises, but i would've liked if something i wanted to like had been really good.

matt, you may want to try out sam roberts and/or the hold steady if you haven't already. it's just a suggestion.

Same problem here. The other day I went through my 06 purchases to see what tracks I want to pull out for my year-end mix and I'm really struggling. I've probably bought around 20 albums so far and have only really liked 5 or 6 very well. I thought 2005 was a slow year but 2006 has been much worse.

I've really liked this year. A lot of my favorite artists have released quality stuff, even if they are inferior to other albums in their discography.

Recs for the Kitty:
Built to Spill - You in Reverse
Willie Nile - Streets of New York
Gomez - How We Operate
Ronnie Spector - Last of the Rock Stars
Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldier
Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
Bob Dylan - Modern Times
Serena Maneesh S/T (if you don't count this as '05)
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Guillemots - Through the Windowpane

(to billyg)

I noticed that you and Radcliffe had both rated FB really high. Honestly, I just think this style is not my bag. It plays into what I don't like about alt-country, although I know this isn't really that genre. 29 songs of basically mid to down tempo stuff just doesn't do it for me, I think. I've given it probably four solid listens and nothing grabs me.

I do have the BtS and YLT albums. Haven't listened to BtS much, but I do like the YLT quite a bit.

I think I'm going to pick up M. Ward and Loose Fur (if I can find it) at lunch.

Hold Steady - RIYL? I've heard a lot of people talking about this band but I have no idea what they're all about.

I'm still warming up to Dylan, so I'm not sure I could handle that one.

There was a big Arctic Monkeys buzz earlier this year, no? Also, who are the Raconteurs?

i did the same thing a few weeks ago to get an idea and i ended up pulling a lot from EPs and singles. and the majority was probably electronica. i was like, "when did i turn into an electronica guy?"

Dalen, give me a quick top 20.

I kind of liked that Magic Numbers album, btw although I'm still lukewarm on it as a whole. There are some really good songs. Thanks for uploading that.

Arctic Monkey: Yes, and while the debut doesn't match the initial hype it's still a solid release. Hints of the post-punk of Interpol and Franz Ferdinand but much rawer.

Raconteurs - Jack White, Brendan Benson, & friends

Hold Steady RIYL - crunchy bar bands, Spoon, Ted Leo

I also thought 2005 and this year were both bad years. I just got that National album a few months ago, and that is starting to redeem that year for me. I didn't quite as much effort into 2005 so I don't feel as stupefied as I do by this year.

Also, I do subscribe to the philosophy that there are probably at least 20 2006 albums out there somewhere I would instantly love, but for some reason finding them has been a bitch this year.

Yes, No, Yes.

Love Franz and Interpol (which is a guilty pleasure these days), think the Stripes are pretty much played out, and I'm a fan of Ted Leo and Spoon. I will look into those. Thanks!

the hold steady gets a handful of springsteen-like descriptions because craig finn has a similar style to songwriting and telling a story. and even his voice is a bit reminiscent of the boss. i think they're just chunky riff-heavy midwest indie-rock.

yes, arctic monkeys definitely had their fifteen minutes of fame. and the raconteurs are jack white, brendan benson, and two guys from the greenhornes.
