As much as I wanted to like this, I think overall it's pretty mediocre with a few really good tracks.

Huh? What's your problem? I'm just giving him a different POV.

I've really liked this year. Much moreso than last for sure.

I've got a bad back. Thank you very much for asking stone.

POV?

Oh right, point of view. Abbreviation. An American curse.

You just seem to be very quick at picking up on stuff I like. A few times previous.

Do you like Bill Wells & Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Melvins, Bardo Pond, Library Tapes, Karl Blau, Dead Man, Xela, Harvey Milk? What do you like
?

I like Frank Black but Fastman/Raiderman bores me to tears. I haven't been really drawn to many new releases, so I've been going back on some old shit.

I really like:
Lucero
Scott H. Biram
Eric Bachmann
Wussy
Willie Nile

Pretty much like:
Roots
Calexico
Willie Nelson
Deadboy & the Elephantmen
Black Keys

I actually think '06 is a pretty good year. We'll see over time how many of these albums stay with me, but I'm gonna have a tough time putting together a Top 20.

And jesus, if you haven't even heard of The Raconteurs or The Hold Steady, don't bitch about the year being shitty, blame yourself.

It has been a great year in my opinion, maybe due to the fact that I have listened to alot more albums this year than I have in a few years. I'm definitely going to revise my top ten list, but I continue to listen to TVOTR and Eric Bachmann on a regular basis and had to give Asobi Seksu another go after seeing them live.
M Ward was a great release, I like The Dears album and Sleepy Jackson was good too.

Yeah, I'm sure being able to evaluate this year's relative worth is definitely predicated on having heard these two particular albums

I can't get into any of the Pollard gbv stuff. ... I started to really get into early Frank Black this year, so I bought his new one on a whim and I can't put it on without falling to sleep. I got a few other recs from the board that I tried to sink my teeth into (Minus 5 for example), but I just can't quite get into them.

The time has come to stage a musical taste intervention.

C'mon, Matt, how can you not dig Pollard, FB and The -5? Those are among the finest releases of the year.

I think he's saying that those two bands have been in every music or lifestyle magazine in the known universe this year. In some cases, multiple times. If you haven't heard of them then you may not have been searching hard enough for new music.

I'm certainly not suggesting that if one missed hearing either of these two particular albums it would drive 2006 from a NAY to a YAY. I am suggesting that perhaps starting a thread bemoaning the shittiness of 2006's output is kind of assinine when you're obviously a bit out of touch with even some of the more well-known releases.

I haven't read music/lifestyle magazines in like 12 years, but yeah, I see what he's saying now.

I can definitely vouch for these four. Especially that Loose Fur.

FT -

I've tried and tried with that -5 album, just because I was really hoping to finally get us some common ground. Here's my final verdict on it after 20-30 listens:

"With a Gun" is one of my favorite songs of the year. Seriously. It's awesome.

I don't love most of the other songs, because I don't like the tone of McCoughey's voice. I don't like his nasally whine for some reason.

Even though I can't stand the Decemberists, I like "Cemetary Row" quite a bit.

If those songs were sung by a singer whose voice I liked more, this record would be in my top 5 for sure.

Some of my 2006 favs...

Strokes - First Impressions
Kasabian - Empire (I gay)
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I am...
Beck - The Information

It's been a slow year for me too. I miss 2005. Okkervil River, Wolf Parade, and Band of Horses really woke me up.

I can totally understand this. I'm real picky about vocals, and the wrong vocal sound can ruin everything for me. While I don't dislike SMcC's voice, I can easily see how others would.
