Not "hip"-est, but "HIPPIE"-est. Here's my nominee, from an un-hippie band and an otherwise un-hippie song:

"But, like, one and one don't make two, one and one make one." - taken from "Bargain" by The Who

I think it's that "like" which puts this one over the top.

In reading that lyric, I can totally picture Neil from TV's The Young Ones saying something like that.

One good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain

Steve Miller should be all up in this thread.

Despite the obvious similarity, let's not confuse "hippie-est" lyric with "stoner-est" lyric. It's an admittedly subtle distinction.

You split a mighty fine hair, sir.

Ironically, it's not by a hippie at all:
...fish ful lof mercury...
Save the children...

-Marvin Gaye: "Mercy Mercy Me"

"Farmer, farmer put away your DDT
I don't mind no spots on my apples
Leave me the birds and the bees..."

-Joni Mitchell: "Big Yellow Taxi"

We are overlooking the hippiest song of all time: CSN's "Love the one your with"

"The eagle flies, with the dove, and if you can't be with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with."

And, Brightblack Morning Light is up there with "We share our blanket with the owl"

I was tokin in my birkenstocks when the man tried to harsh my mellow
but i said, "hey sour fellow, the sunshine is too yellow"
and we grabbed him by the hand and danced until the land came to an end
and danced in the ocean knowing the whole world was our friend

I still say all the Steve Miller shit about
"fly like an eagle, to the sea,
fly like an eagle let my spirit carry me,
...
Feed the babies / shoe the children, etc
ahhh ahhh there's a solution"

= HIPPY BULLSHIT at its finest.

Stills solo, but yes, that's a good call.

Yes, you're right. When you mentioned him, I immediately thought of "The Joker," which is much more stoner than hippie.

I always thought that "like" was the beginning of a simile. But it doesn't really make sense.

You're probably right, but as Benry says, that shoots my theory all to sunshine.

first thing that came to mind...

'And the sign said "Long-haired freaky people need not apply"
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why'

I think we may have a winner! Well done, Bart.

good one bgl3

From a Hippie band

She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes
I knew without asking she was into the blues

she had scarlet begonias tucked into her hair
I knew right away she was not like other girls

She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh.
I told her I didn't and crawled off to sleep in the bath.

I love Built To Spill, but this some hippy ass shit.

Car

You get the car
I'll get the night off
You'll get the chance to take the world apart and figure out how it works
Don't let me know what you find out
I need a car
You need a guide
Who needs a map
If I don't die or worse I'm gonna need a nap
At best I'll be asleep when you get back
I wanna see it when you find out what comets, stars, and moons are all about
I wanna see their faces turn to backs of heads and slowly get smaller

Q: What's red and yellow and looks great on Hippies?

A: Fire.

Over rocks and trees and sand
Soaring over cliffs
And gently floating down to land
She proudly lifts her voice
To sound her mating call
And soon her mate responds by singing
Caw Caw Caw
Come with me

Lesbian Seagull

Settle down and rest with me

Fly with me lesbian seagull

To my little nest by the sea
With me that's where you belong with me
I know I can be strong when you're with me
She skims the water
At the new time to seek
Her fish and she emerges
With one squirming in her beak

She plays among the waves
And hides between the swells
She walks the beach at twilight

Searching for some shells
Come with me

Lesbian Seagull

Settle down and rest with me

Oh fly with me lesbian seagull

To my little nest by the sea

With me that's where you belong with me
I know I can be strong when you're -- you're with me

And in the evening
As they watch the setting sun
She loooks at her as if to say
The day is done
It's time to find their shelter

Hidden in the dunes

And fall asleep the
Music of the moon
You and me

Lesbian seagull

You just watch the world oh my

Just you and me lesbian seagull

Side by side with me 'till we die
('Till we die)
You and I
We can make it if we try
Our love will keep us flyin' high

Until we die...

Wow, I didn't even know Portland had an anthem.

That's the Englebert Humperdinck song from Beavis And Butthead.

Ironic hippiedom is disqualified, like, so heavy.
