I've got the opportunity to go into NYC soon and was wondering if there are any Amoeba-worthy record stores I've got to hit up while I'm there.

Suggestions?

Are there any left? Bleecker Bob's, if only for sentimental reasons. I thinks St. Marks Sounds shut down ages ago.

bleeker bobs is a shell of itself. some decent vinyl to be found possibly, but little else.

sounds is still open and thriving.. good for the more mainstream stuff. yo'ull find cheap stuff there.

Kims underground on st. marks is good for the hard to find stuff, but a tad expensive. same with Other Music.

Academy is pretty decent as well. mostly for jazz and classical though. the best place to find rare gems in the used section.. the staff, however think they are acting out the movie high fidelity. bunch of douche bags for the most part.

etheria is small but has some pretty good stuff.

and i know a few places in brooklyn (names escape me) that are good.

kim's, other, and generation are my trifecta. i do try to hit sounds whenever i'm there too.

and if you're into vinyl, the thing in brooklyn is pretty great, even though it's apparently not as great as it once used to be.

I was never a huge bleeker bob's fan.

Other Music was definitely my favorite...plus the staff aren't complete assholes, in fact some are downright friendly and always willing to give reccomendations without acting all snobby.

yeah, Generations is pretty good, but i find em really overpriced...90% used stuff. amazing obscure metal section. tons of vinyl. tons of shirts. and a friendly kitty that wanders the basement.

I was able to walk to a few when I was visiting the Village. One was Other Music (not bad, a little pricey), one was in Alphabet City (I believe), and one was in SOHO. All were pretty small, but between the three, some decent vinyl and used CDs.

Clearly, I'm no help, but if you're visiting that area, someone may be able to be of some use to you.

Other Music is pretty fucking good, if a little expensive. Soundfix records in Williamsburg (Brooklyn) is also excellent.

Bleeker Bob's was never the same after Kramer and Newman tried selling all the old man's crappy albums and then got into a fight with the guy at the counter about how little he offered to pay.

other music is pretty solid. former kim's staff. did kim's underground move, technically? i worked there years back and it was on bleecker. there's another bigger one on st mark's and one over around bleecker/w 10th as well
