Because I like baseball, I hope he does well. Because those fools bid 51 million for the rights to obtain him, I hope he fails.

According to a National League scout quoted by "Baseball Prospectus," the repertoire consists of a mid-90s fastball, a cutter, a two-seam fastball known as a "shuuto," a curveball, a changeup, a splitter, and a slider. Again according to Baseball Prospectus, another NL scout says he has three different sliders, which would give him nine pitches. Mike Mussina will be jealous.

And then, of course, there is the "gyroball."

Yup, the "gyroball." That, too, is part of the Daisuke Matsuzaka lore. A "gyroball" is an exotic pitch that is said to act like a mega-splitter. Approaching the plate like a fastball, it then takes an enormous dive, or so they say. Supposedly invented by a Japanese physicist, it is said to spiral like a Peyton Manning pass, rather than spin like a Bert Blyleven curveball. Is this possible? I don't know, but I await with great eagerness Matsuzaka's first Fenway news conference.

I don't understand paying an outrageous amount of money just to negotiate with a player and then paying him an outrageous amount to play for a few years.
Is he good? yes
Will he have a long career? Probably not
Will it drastically improve the Red Sox? Not a chance
He'll put butts into seats, but the Red Sox don't really have that problem
Supposedly Japanese Pitchers have a tendency to wear down alot more than American Pitchers during the MLB season due to how conservative they play baseball in Japan and that they have a deeper rotation.
I don't know if I'd waste that kind of money on his skills, if he becomes mediocre in less than two years.

How many bad starts will he be allowed before the "internment camp" jokes start?

Boston, please don't let me down....

$51 million to negotiate and god knows how many more million to sign... don't they still need a closer, center fielder, and 2-3 more starting pitchers considering Schilling and Wakefield are most likely gone after this year?

The AL East is hysterical.

there is a youtube of this pitch. it looks pretty serious, but his opposition will also be major league batters this time. and they do know how to make adjustments.

where do i start here? won't improve the red sox drastically to have a front of the rotation 26 year old who already proved himself on the world stage? he compares favorable to santana, and may even be better. and also explain why he will probably not have a long career? hehas pitched about 185 innings a year over his career. i don't see that as abuse. also, tell me how having a deeper rotation and pitchign every 6th day contributes to wear please.

Theo Epstein isn't a fool. My guess is either they have run numbers and figured out the value of Matsuzaka to the Redsox in terms of international television revenues exceeds the $51 million and they will offer a contract based on his perceived value as a player or the bid is mostly a block against the yankees signing him. Remember they pay nothing if they don't sign him.

He could be a great player or he could be the second coming of Hideki Irabu. Comparing him favorably at this point to Johan Santana is just crazy. If I had to guess I'd say he'll end up being one of the top 20-30 pitchers in the league but not one of the top 5-10. That's just a guess though. Its hard to really justify a huge multi year contract on him based on reasonable expectations of performance but there's not a whole lot of pitchers with his upside that are readily obtainable. Teams tend to lock up their young star pitchers and not trade 'em.

They've got Crisp in CF, Pena or Hinske can play RF and there was a rumor that they're talking to JD Drew too. Schilling, Papelbon, Beckett and if they get Daisuke it's a pretty good starting rotation. The only question mark is closer/middle rotation.

If you're a Red Sox fan do you really care how much the Sox spend to get him? They have so much revenue it's good that they're spending it instead of just saving the profit. So they bid 10 Million more than the Mets....what's 10 million to the Sox?

I think their top bid was more to keep the dude away from the Yankees more than anything. The $51 million was just to negotiate a contract with him. So let's say he gets 10 mil over 3 years, that's 27 million a year for someone who has never thrown a pitch before in MLB.

There's a good column by Sean McAdam on ESPN about this.
