I'm bored at work and watched some ESPN thing featuring Bob Gibson the other day, so I decided to ask who the best athlete from your state, province or city is, since some of us live abroad.
For Nebraska, The top three are IMO are:
Bob Gibson
Gale Sayers
Wade Boggs

With Honorable mention to: Grover Cleveland Alexander, Bob Boozer and Andy Roddick.

Louisiana & Mississippi have the highest amount of pro-atheletes per capita in the US. Yet, I'm having a hard time coming up with some dominant ones.

Marshall Faulk, Billy Cannon, and Joe Dumars off the top of my head but I'm sure I could probably do alot better than that.

What guidelines are you using?

They have to have been born in your state?

Yeah, I used born, since Boggs didn't spend much time in Nebraska after birth but was born here.
I didn't include college, since Nebraska has had a ton of great athletes who weren't from this state.

Don't think so. Gale Sayers was born in the great state of Kansas, was a two-time All-American at KU, but attended HS in Omaha. Practically no ties to NE besides the rape conviction.

Barry Sanders
Jim Ryun
Walter Johnson
John Riggins

I need to be hosed off after posting in this thread.

Sayers lives and works in Omaha, and according to Wikipedia he is considered a Nebraskan, but if he is disqualified then Grover Cleveland Alexander gets bumped up.
Georgous George and Mad Dog Vachon are the best pro wrestlers from this state. I believe Ted Dibiase is also from here.

Dave Winfield - from St. Paul, MN.

Out of college he was selected in the MLB draft, the NBA draft, the ABA draft, and despite never playing football, the NFL draft based sheerly on athleticism.

I'd take Red Grange over Dick Butkus, Todd.

Technically born in PA, but moved to Illinois at 5 and spent his entire pro and college career here.

Quote:
But it was his performance in an October 18, 1924 game against Michigan which began his legend. He opened the game with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Within the next twelve minutes he scored three more touchdowns in three runs totaling 167 yards. These four touchdowns were as many as Michigan had given up in the two previous seasons.
